Just fyi - I bought 2 boxes of this stuff, Made In Russia (I should have known better...) - Barnaul fmj .308's - loaded 'em up. and...click...click...click

Firing pin impressions dead center on the primer, just no bang....

I tried about 8 rounds out of each box - NOTHING, NADA......

I bought them at Lebarons Markham store. They'll be goin' right back tomorrow.

Odd. I went threw 3 boxes over the last few weeks and never had a single issue. Mind you the surplus and American Eagle stuff I had shot better groups.

Is it mil-surp ammo? What rifle are you using?

Similar complaint on the Norinco 5.56 - it has hard military primers which are apparently not reliable in bolt guns.

toomanyhobbies is correct, we need to know what rifle you are using it in... And, we need to know if the Barnul ammo has a military primer in it...

I'll give you an example... I bought my M14 in 2007, did a Hungry clinic with it & promptly stored it UNFIRED with the hammer cocked for 2 years! Finally took it out & it would only fire commercial ammo, but not the Military surplus stuff... I bought it from Marstar & they replaced the hammer spring, problem solved...

Recently, some folks have been posting that the 5.56 Norinco ammo occassionaly doesn't fire in their bolt gun... Put the same round in an AR15 or Tavor & BANG...

Cheers

I had issues with "failure to fire" with IVI 7.62 ball ammunition in a bolt gun that fired non-mil-spec primers fine.
After I upgraded the firing pin spring to a heavier "weight" the problem with mil-spec primers was eliminated.

Sorry, I should have said - I was firing it through my BLR Model 81.

There is nothing on the packaging to suggest that it is surplus ammo. Just ".308 Rifle Cartridges" and then in brackets (7.62x51). "145 gr. Full Metal Jacket". Has the usual retail safety-type warnings - stuff like "keep out of reach of children" etc etc. The base of each round says "308 WIN".

Also, I have never had a FTF with this gun, ever, no matter what I put in it.

If it says 7.62x51 it's almost surely got military primers & they are harder...

It is not your gun, it is not the ammo, it is the combination of the two... Your BLR is a commercial hunting gun, the ammo is intended for a military gun...

If you took that ammo & put it in a M14, I guarantee it would fire! Even the ones you already tried in your BLR!

oh, well, ok.........but I haven't had an M-14 for 45 years....and even then, the one I had belonged to Uncle Sam - they made me give it back when I left......:(

I do appreciate the replies, though. Makes sense. Thanks. :)

Time to buy yourself one - even if it's the Chinese knockoff. They're actually pretty decent for the price. Better than wasting all that nice ammo!

I just went out today with the same Barnaul 308 from the Markham Le Baron. Outdoor range so was about what today? -2 i think. Norinco M14 22" and I went through a box of 20 rounds no problems. Went bang on every round.

A guy at the range was throwing out some "dud" Barnaul .308 ammo. Each one had a firing pin strike in the centre. He was using a bolt action hunting rifle of some sort. I had my Norc M305 with me so I asked if I could have them and he handed them to me. I loaded them up and each and ever round (7?) fired first time.

Definitely really hard primers.
