I'm thinking of getting some barnes bullets for my new guide gun...

anyways.

in the triple shock :

450 or 500?? how much of a differnece?? which one would would U get? are they too big??

or maybe i should just get the 250 or 300 x-bullet...

and I'm also looking at the banded solids in 450 and 500??? ever shoot these guys... are they good for hunting or for a oh #### round to put in the gun at night??

I'm still trying to figure out what powder to use for the above... Imr3031 or H4198

I own the barnes manual but there is no load data for the banded solids???

Thanx

Jason

If you're talking about the Marlin guide gun, the TSX's are pointed, so you couldn't load them into the mag, even if you could load them short enough to feed, which I'm not sure of.

Barnes does make a 250 and 300 grain FLAT NOSE X bullet specifically for the 45/70...

I've also wondered about the banded solids for the GG... wanna split a box? :D

As for powders, both the 3031 and 4198 are good choices.

I'm thinking the 500 gr ones would be too long to load reliably in your lever gun....the 450's might be iffy too.....

For my purposes I was thinking Grizzly bear inside of 30 yards, so I could reduce the powder charge a little to compensate for the deep seated slug.

I'd have to lood at one to see if you could crimp it right tho...

"...Grizzly bear inside of 30 yards..." If Yogi is that close you might as well get in the picnic basket. A 450 or 500 grain bullet won't matter at 30 yards. Even if you do get off a killing shot, Yogi will be on you before he goes to Jellystone heaven.
If you're afraid of bears, stay home.

Be warned Poguebilt.....I used these before in my 458 American.
They were accurate however they had a dramatic difference in point of aim.
It seems to me that any bullet with a lead core was not even close the impact of the Barnes X Bullet in my personal experience.

You may want to try a few before you commit ($$), if you have a scope or deeper pockets than me, this may or may not be on a issue to you....

Cheers...

so should I just stick to the leverevelution bullets or what then?

I am so impressed withe the barnes bullets for my 30.06 that I figures why not try them in my guide gun!?

because Barnes doesnt make a TSX suitable for your rifle

they do still list regular X bullets in 250 & 300 grain

WTF does what I said have to do with being afraid of bears?

Thanks for the advice though.

Aw great - I thought this would be about reloading, but it turns out to be another Grizzly Bear Defence Thread!!! I'm not completely sure, but I believe this is the 485th Time. :p Mods?

MY THREAD is supposed to be about reloading!!! I just spent my hard earned money on a rcbs reloading kit and a marlin 45/70 guide gun and wanted to know about the barnes bullets...

I have read lot of posts of the other brands and maybe someone had something good to say or maybe not??

Thanx

Barnes 300gr F.N.S.P.

Hi Jason. I just loaded up of the above mentioned Barnes Flant Nose Soft Point bullets for my Guide Gun. I have the bullets sitting on top of 49gr of IMR 3031 with a dacron filler. It chronoed on average 1830- 19000fps, and man did it ever tear through a cardboard box full of wet newspapers, and with a thick piece of shag carpet in front of it. I shot it at about 45yds and it ploughed through the whole box. (The type of box where photocopy paper comes in.) This is the load I'm going to use for my moose hunt. Up where I hunt if you get a 40yd shot, it's considered a long shot. I think this reciepe would do it on a bear. Good Luck and tell us the results if you try thi

thats what I was looking for!!!

sorry... but what is a dacron filter...??

thanx...
Hi Jason, dacron filler is that white polyester-type material that you find in cushions and pillows. They are available in fabric stores. I got a bag full from my dog's bed. I've known people to even use toilet paper. It works, but I get a little concerned when it's kind of damp out.

I'd choose 4198, and that is part of Hodgdon's "Extreme" line, suitable for all temperatures with little pressure variation.

RL7, H4895, Varget or Benchmark would be a couple other choices.

Re: the TSX, you can also load some up and keep them on a side saddle or ammo pouch. You'd need to load them singly, by hand, directly into the chamber, so they wouldn't fulfil the all-important Bear Defensssss role, but if you felt like you needed to have an Ace up your sleeve in terms of sectional density, those long TSXes shoot very nicely from most Marlins I've seen...
