Mr Hungry Sir,

I have an M14 Shorty and I've been trying to zero the thing, but heres my problem:

I have the rear sight bottomed out, wont go any lower, and at 50m, I am STILL 10 inches High. Anything I can do before I take a dremel to the front post?>

From what I have been reading, POA POI at 25m should be the same as 200m for a 147ish gr 308 bullet, so I should be fixin to get about the same thing at 50m.

If I DO have to take a dremel to it, how much am I looking at shaving down? I'd imagine its quite a bit if I am supposed to be 6-8 clicks up from the bottom for a 200m Zero.

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated....

Also, I shot 180 gr core lokt the first time I ever fired my rifle. It was high too. what is the difference in trajectory between 147 gr and 180gr???

Thankxs in advance....

Do I maybe have a sight from a regular length M14? I see lots of posts from people commenting on how high their shorty sight posts are. one even said it was above the protecting crown.

I would highly suggest that you contact Springfield Armory Inc. here in the 'States and get a M1A Bush Rifle front sight blade, there is also the front sight for a USGI grenade launcher ( I do not remember the model) that is a direct fit, but it is even taller than the SAI Bush Rifle sight.

I would also suggest that you replace your Chinese rear sight assy, and replace it with a USGI M14 or M1 Garand rear sight assembly, and grind the tang of the aperature down like in a match conditioned M14 or Garand sight.

There is a post on Youtube about how to change the rear sight on an M14. He mentions having shaved the tail of his site insert to get it to go lower in the sight. I'll see if I can find it.

EDIT:

Its this one

He bevels the tail of the aperture insert, right about the 4:00 min mark. Might be worth a shot

MIKE!!!

Thanks! that is awesome. I will do what he shows in the video, hopefully I can get it down enough to drop my POI 10 inches.

To the rest of you, I was going to call the lot of you a bunch of condescending pr&cks, but quickly realized you all saved me from making a HUGE mistake!!!! Thanks

I would doubt that shaving your rear sight aperture is going to completely correct your problem, most likely you will, at some point, discover that you truly need a taller front sight.

On my buddy's Norc, the same elevation problem on a new rifle had a simple solution: just needed to push on the rear sight while turning the elevation nob so that it slipped downwards into proper position, ie. It was stuck!

I agree.
The aperture mod is a national match mod done on a rifle with a 22" barrel.
The modification's purpose is not to relieve or correct a short or otherwise imperfect front sight.

It is to allow the rear sight to zero correctly at a desired number of "clicks" from bottom, when using a hooded NM rear aperture and NM dimension front blade sight.

The issue with the shorter barrels dictates solving the problem at the front sight.
Alternative front sights that will fit your norc flash hider
SAI bush rifle front sight
SAI Socom front sights
SEI front sight for 18" barrels.

Do you think Norinco accidentally put a 22in bbl sight on my shorty causwe it was a friday? Havent heard any other shorty owners complain...

I was going to file it down today but never got around to it.

Mine too LOL
So I just called SAI today and ordered a bush rifle front sight. (18" barrel)
Using this sight should be better than a tall blade norc sight as the bush rifle sight has the blade 'and' ears the correct dimension to afford the correct sight picture and proper alignment for the eye thru the rear aperture.
The way it should work is, look thru aperture, align sight ears to just touch top of aperture circle, then raise muzzle to "post" the target on the blade and all is gravy.
The tall norc sights don't work for this at all LOL

Ummm, I guess that you must be kidding, or is it a Canadian thing to not listen to sound advice....

You need a much taller front sight, not a shorter sight.

If you dont believe me, go ahead, file that front sight away, that will learn ya.....:HR:.
