So I have a rem700 long action with a bolt face suitable for 300WM etc.. The rifle I would like will be 95% bench shooting ( Our range goes to 500yds so doubt I will shoot further but who knows) with a slight chance it might find its way to my hunting stand so I wont be packing it around much. I am wondering what contour barrel should I be looking at .

Yet again thanks for all the advice

Pick the barrel contour that you are willing to carry. Remember that to get the full advantage of a magnum cartridge a longer than sporting length barrel is needed. I would choose at least a 26 inch length. If possible get a 5r or poly. rifled bore. A barrel wears faster with a standard sharp edged rifling than than with either 5r or poly. rifling. Also 5r and poly are easier to clean and give a longer service life. 5r rifling is available from a number of suppliers and poly barrels can be sourced from a Lothar Walther dealer.

If you are mainly shooting from the bench, then why not go with a M24, M40, MTU or Bull profile? There is no point in giving up weight and rigidity. Go long and heavy, but be sure that it will clear your stock/chassis or be prepared to remove material.

Bench shooting with a magnum? Weight will be your friend so I would be looking at a bull barrel probably around 1" diameter. And a muzzle brake. Better yet, go 1.200" or whatever the remington tennon is and cut back even more recoil.

MTU contour, 5R Rifling, Terminator Brake or the MX1 Cadex Brake to help with the recoil. Have at least a 26 inch finish. ..... my 0.02 cents :)

Why a 300wm? For the Hunting use? Seems like a little over kill for 500m bench.
Just my two cents. Not that there worth much.

I may probably go over 500 yards after I am comfortable with the gun. Also I might use it to hunt long range at the farm and having a little more horse power is the way I like to go with big game.

Yes I know that you can drop an elk at 700 yards with a .243 but that won't be something I want to try.

Fair enough.
Just doesn’t sound like a good compromise. Packing a 15lbs bench gun for any type of hunting, and shooting any amount of bench rest with a 300wm.

If I hunt it will be from my shootin shack at the farm so not much lugging around. Got a few other toys for that lol...

And if I get this one wrong then I will just have to convince the boss I need another one.

Yes I would like a brake. I am already deaf and the old shoulder needs a little TLC lol...

If its braked you can get away with alot less barrel weight if you have a brake helping out. I would suggest a hawkhill marksman contour. Very nice barrel contour but enough barrel to soak up some heat and maintain no point of impact shift on a 5 or 7 shot string but able to be a decent weight to log for a little walking and stalking

My hunting 300 WM has a 28" light palma benchmark and I have a limbsaver nitromag pad. I can shoot 200gr all afternoon and the barrel will suffer a lot more than my shoulder. And no I never use brake. A rifle properly balanced which fits your body will handle a lot better than something that dont fit with a brake. I know brakes are popular theses days. But when you're in a sand pit with a face wind, close your mouth before you pull the trigger

This here is good advice if you don't want to go with one of the real "heavy" profiles (M40, M24, MTU, etc) although in your use case, I see no disadvantage of going heavy. Go with something 26" or 28" long so you don't leave any ballistic performance on the table. You can easily take a 300 WM to a mile+.
