Does the barrel band on the Marlin 336W make any difference from the 336A which doesn't have one? I've heard that carbines with barrel bands tend to spread groups as they heat up? Opinions?

the rear band wont affect groups at all if it's on there properly, as in not loose. the front band will seriously affect accuracy if it is too tight though. my 336RC has a rear barrel band and will shoot a consistant 1.5" group at 100m all day long no matter how hot it is. and thats with a williams peep sight.

so in short no, it wont affect the accuracy. forestock contact with the barrel if it's not bedded can cause stringing when it heats up, and that goes for both models. i high heat silicon bedded the forestock and put a silicon dampener between the mag and barrel, and a little dab of blue locktite on the band screws will prevent any loosening causing shot to shot variation.

i just tested my new loads for my 30-30 a week ago and from forty yards i had a 3 shot group of half an inch. and thats measuring outside to outside. minus .308 and thats a .2" group. i don't think the barrel band is a bad thing in this case. its a great gun (marlin 336c)

This sounds interesting, but I wouldn't know how to do it. Could you direct me to a source of info on doing the high heat silicon thing? Is the silicon dampener a custom thing, or can I buy one somewhere?
Thanks!

here you go, i did most of this to all my leverguns and let me tell you... Mic Mcpherson knows what he's talking about, it really does wonders for accuracy. just remember to use paste wax or something for release agent... i didn't for the first gun i did and im not looking forward to the day i need to take it apart. i used grey gasket silicone from an auto supply store, good to 400 + degrees F.
