Barrel blanks in Canada?

This is what I done yesterday, I used an old cooey 22lr barrel to begin my project(a complete Walther P38 barrel in 22lr, not only a sleeve like the conversion kits). It was not easy because the outside of the barrel was taper and pitted by rust, the extremities were also already butchered by grinder cuts. So it was extremely hard to install this barrel in my lathe without any good references to begin with. Anyway, it was a fun test and I will continue this project later in the summer. I will see at the range if this barrel can shoot straight but I don't have too much expectations

The rifle itself does not exist anymore. I only have an old butchered barrel. The remaining of the barrel cannot be installed on any existing weapon because the two sides have been cut with a grinder. How could it be illegal?

That is not correct. If I take an AR barrel off the upper and cut it to 12", it's a prohibited device regardless of whether or not you ever reinstall it back on the upper. If you are in possession of a 3.5" Glock barrel without the gun, it's still a prohibited device (a Toronto police officer got convicted of this several years ago).
If you take a rifle barrel and cut the chamber off, while personally I would consider it no longer a barrel, the RCMP have a different opinion.

Agree, thats the problem with the firearm act....
And thanks for the advice! Anyway, I was not confident about this barrel, it's not a problem for me to destroy it and waiting to find a good quality blank barrel to do this project. But I still think those laws are total crap.

a piece of steel with identifying marking on it , caliber or chambering is a barrel...a piece of steel with internal treading in it is just that, an internally treaded pipe.
I guess we should all keep our mouths shut so "that guy" doesn't have to waste his time with us and our barrel blanks. Gunsmiths must have a special licence to be able to cut barrels when they are working.

I never said you couldn't cut a barrel blank to whatever size you want.
You could take a 24" blank and cut it into into 5 4.8" pieces and then make pistol barrels out of them.
But if you take a 24" barrel blank, chamber it, then cut it to 4.8", that's illegal. Regardless of whether you're a gunsmith or not.

If you need shorter "pistol" blanks, let me know. There is a savings vs a rifle length blank but most find it a better value to buy a long barrel blank and getting more raw material.
