I am thinking of starting a project on re-chambering my sks for the 5.45x39 cartridge and am looking for barrel blanks and was looking for some recommendations for here in Canada? I know its an uncommon round for Canada but figured i would ask. I have found some sites in the usa with blanks around $100 and could get i run guns or prophet river to import them.

If you can get it for $100 then you're golden. Bits of Pieces sells Green Mountain. Many others sell match grade barrels. Bob Jury, Ron Smith, Ted Gaillard, and I'm sure others actually make barrels here in Canada.

Yes green mountain is the what i was looking at $100 plus exchange and import fees. I emailed bits of pieces earlier this week with no reply. It says on green mountains site that Dlask and Jo-Brook Firearms are canadian distributors so that's my next route since green mountain has such a large varieties of barrels to choose from.

I've brought in Shilen barrels from Brownells. Paperwork is easy to do.

Thanks, don't see a 5.45 blank on brownells site.

A $1000 fix to a $200 gun.

Sure it will be $1000 for the first one with all the tooling and reamer and whatnot, but than i have all the tools to do it for others and will be well under $1000. A benefit to this $200 gun is that you can take it out in the woods and hunt with it if you choose to, you dont get that option with an AR.

That's great and all, but where is your source for affordable 5.45 ammo, or any source really. My understanding is there is basically none of it in Canada due to a complete lack of demand for it.

Just found some 545x39 hornady steel case amax from SFRC, i bought all 5 boxes lol. Works out to .61 cents a shot. Found some wolf steel case 545x39 on canada ammo for $.53 cents a shot, but they are all out of stock. Green tip 223's work out to $.59 cents a shot based on canada ammo's price.

Neck down 7.62X39

Close but the 545x39 rim diameter is actually smaller than the 762x39. Also i don't want to make it a custom round, i want it to shoot factory 545x39 ammo when it pops up

His money, his hobby of choice

Exacly, plus i am laid off right now so i have nothing but time on my hands

Or buy Lapua 220 Russian brass and fire form?

That is what my first thought was until i found some loaded ammo for a good price
