Barrel break in

I am still waiting on a good, logical, explanation on "why break it in" from the break it in camp.

A very good mate of mine who shoots out to 1200 yards (silver medallist at 1000, 1100 and 1200 yards this summer at Bisley) swears by it. Mind you he puts lots more down his competition barrels than I do and he believes it gets him about 1/3 more rounds life out of the barrel!

bore prep

heres my two pennies.......i make a balsa wood plug to fit the bore of my new rifle...slop it with jewelers rouge and sit in front of the t.v. ....push it through 300 times....( takes a couple pints )....give it a good washing w hot water then nitro...dry patch it .....shoot 30 rounds.....do the balsa plug 100 times more and you are done....( clean again of course)...a noticeable
edge in accuracy......it also lets you bond with your firearm...( push through from action of course )...have had excellent results over 30 years ....old school technology..it's how i learned to buid guns...just my piece...Thanks

havent read all 5 pages so not sure if this has been mentioned or not..

but if your worried about the barrel being rough and collecting copper or lead.

get a cleaning rod with a cloth tip and apply some toothpaste to it, run it up and down the barrel for a while. it should pollish the barrel fairly well. i wouldent do it with a semi though, it might clog the little tube.

could also do it with paper, though it will take longer.

but id just shoot it. then clean it well oil it and put it away really. only things i ever break in are things with valves and seals. (engins paintball guns air guns things like that)
