Could a barrel threaded for a 96 Mauser be made to fit a model 700 Remington without toomuch trouble? Is a 96 Mauser a large ring or small ring action?

Not really...it would require a lot of machining, threading, bushing, threading, fitting. A horrid job. There are far better Remingotn pull off barrels available that would require very little work.

96 I think is a small ring mauser.

I go with a takeoff 700 barrel, would be cheaper in the long run screwing on a barrel then going to a smith or machine shop and getting the correct threads cut.

Second what Guntech said. You have to really enjoy threading on a lathe to get any kick out of doing it.
I wouldn't call it horrid, but it would certainly be expensive to pay someone to do.
You need a Rem 700 barrel? There are millions out there, and they usually fit up with almost no tweaks required.
I'll sell you a couple...

I installed one of the NOS M38 barrels on a commercial Husqvarna action. No problem fitting it. Threads were correct.

Thanks for the replies fellows. So if the 96 is a small ring Mauser would the barrel fit on a 1600 Husqvarna?

Yes, they will interchange. But WHY???? Intersurplus has fully assembled Husky 1600 rifles at a price that would make your project unreasonable, other than for a learning experience and if you have to pay someone to do the work???????

Tiriaq, I screwed one of those NOS Swede 6.5 barrels onto one of those Turkish "large ring" actions with the small ring threads, it fit perfectly, and if I wanted to leave it there, would only require a few thou turned off the shoulder to tighten up to specs. Could be an interesting project, IF I get desperate for something to create. To much other stuff on the go right now to consider it.

i chased the threads on a 71/84 Mauser barrel from 1.000" x 12tpi, down to .980" x 12tip and threaded it into one of those receivers, I set the head space with the belt but the barrel indexed properly.

i cut a belt groove in the camber and now use 375hh brass cut to 62mm and ran though 43 Mauser dies and call it for the 43 express

Nice work and great idea.

Keeping those old rifles working and sometimes even improving them is a great pastime. Especially with results such as those you have achieved.

With that action, and jacketed bullets, that would turn into a real mauler of a cartridge.
