New to me Beretta 71 that came with a 6" barrel off the EE.

I cut the barrel with a hack saw to with 3mm or so of my final length (I was aiming for 106mm). I used an old metal lathe at my work to finish it up. Not the greatest lathe but it did the job. I trimmed the end down to length and cut a flat face, cut the crown at 45 degrees, then cut two chamfers on the outer edge. I then used a file to round the face, and finished up with sandpaper. I read on here about using a piece of brass and polishing compound to hone the crown, so I turned a brass tool and used some compound I sharpen wood carving tools with and touched up the crown. It seems okay, I'll find out how well I did when finally I shoot it.

I stopped by CDN Tire on my way home and got a bottle of Outer's Gun Blue. When I opened the bottle and saw a thin light blue kool-aid looking liquid I figured I had a tough job ahead of me to touch this up. I followed the directions, with the addition of using a heat gun to get the metal to the point where I could barely hold the barrel to heat it. I then applied the blue. I was surprised at how dark it went on. Didn't look that nice at first but after lightly hitting it with steel whool as per the directions the result with only one application is shown below.

Next job is to dovetail a front sight onto the barrel. I ordered a dovetail bit and front sight from Brownells. I missed a delivery today that I'll pickup tomorrow. Hopefully it will be my Brownells order and I can use the mill at my work tomorrow to finish my project.

###y gun man, great job I had the same gun and wanted to cyt th ebarrel but I ended up selling it to fund other projects, wish I kept it one hell of a cool little gun, good work man looks sweet

Thanks guys.

that the .22lr version?

Yup, .22lr verison.

More work today and yesterday. My front site and dovetail bit came from Brownells yesterday. I began by milling the front site shorter, as it was 0.63" or so long. Next I milled a flat for the site to sit on, then setup and cut the dovetail. Went very smoothly.

First pic is the site and the dovetail, with a bit of file work done. After this I blued the exposed metal, then used a brass rod and hammer to drift the sight in place.

Third pic shows the dovetail edges shaped to the profile of the barrel. This was alot of work, beginning with a dremel, then a few hours with a small file, then finishing with some sandpaper.

Fourth and fifth pics are the exposed edges blued. Turned out okay, but not as nice as the muzzle IMO. After that are a few shots of the assembled gun. I'm leaving the sight rough for now until I sight it in and figure where I need to trim the top of the sight to.

what did the gun look like before?

I saved this from the EE ad:

6" barrel with no front sight at all.

I got to take it out tonight and shoot it. I think I found a good sight picture with it, but I will be conservative in the amount of sight a mill off to begin with. I can always take off more, but not put height back.

It shoots pretty good, my first target with 50 shots was a large vertical grouping as I was dialing in where to put the front site height wise. Looks like my crown job turned out pretty well. I think I will mill off 0.1" tomorrow then go back to the range Saturday.

Milled the front sight by 0.05" on a 10 degree angle. Will take it out tomorrow and see if I need to go lower.

Thanks guys.

Geologist, I have that photo, and a few others printed off to use as examples. When I get the final height I will probably mill that sharp angle into the front portion. I just milled it at a slight angle for now so it looked better.

Very nice work

Thankyou.

I shot it today and it shoots very well if I hold the gun a bit high. With the front sight centered and level it shoots good if the top of the sights completely cover the target, which I don't like. I would prefer to see at least half the target. I'll look at how much more I need to take off.

It also shoots a bit to the left. Not sure if this is me or the gun. The front sight is a bit too think anyways, so thinning it down on the right side would move the point of impact to the right and make a better sight picture.

I filed the front sight down by 0.02" and added a 30 degree angle to the front. These will be the final pics as anymore work will be lowering the front a small amount and won't really change the look.

Nice work Matt!

I know you are trying to stay true to the original, but have you considered milling a second front site, with a Patridge profile for target shooting?

Thankyou, but this site ain't coming out. It was a bit of a ##### to get in, and I really like the fit it has. I'd hate to mar it up swapping sites. This won't be that good of a target gun anyways, with a 4.17" barrel.
