Barrel coolers

I just read couple of third party forums,
some people are believers and some big name shooters not really.
I could not visit my 300M range over the hottest part of the season because of some stupid weird medical schedules, but hoping to start again soon.
Shooting from shade I believe can help preserving my match barrel.
Plenty of time on my table, tinkering eventually for some diy blower, to try?

I stretch 3/8” tubular gauze over my barrel so it’s very thin, held on each end with tape, then soak it with water, as the water evaporates its cools the barrel very fast, and cools the barrel well below ambient.

Cooling with air can only cool to ambient temp.

I shot a PRS match this summer, lots of 12rd stages with my light-ish sporter barrel, kept it cool the whole match.

Evaporative cooling does not work if the relative humidity is high.

The magnetospeed one is overpriced for what it is. The Amazon air pumps are quieter and move just as much air.

The Surgitube idea seems like it would be very effective. Although I would probably still give the barrel a fair bit of time to equalize because I am not certain about the accuracy effects of having a section that is at a different temperature.

Huh. Just stumbled upon this thread. And in a weirdly timely way, too. I was out testing a few loads in a couple of different hunting rifles yesterday and barrels became almost too hot to touch after just two 3-shot strings. I ended up having to sit around twiddling my thumbs to allow a bit of cooling. I had never considered the mini air pumps. Sounds like a good idea.

No big mystery....blowing air down a bore will cool it quicker than leaving it sit.....not sure what's not to "believe".....
Yea stand it up in the rack and let the little pump blow up thru it makes a HUGH. difference in barrel temp in a matter of a few minutes ! Easy to feel the air temp coming out the muzzle 👍

Thanks RJ I was looking for something like this myself and that's a fantastic solution.

I see you've got it plugged into a battery pack. Any idea how long it'll run on its own before needing a recharge?

Looks like 15 minutes according to the literature.

I think I will pick up one of these. Any issues with using a plastic tube and it being around high heat?

If your barrel is getting hot enough to melt the plastic all the way back at the start of the chamber I think you've got bigger issues than the plastic melting lol

An old CO 2 fire extinguisher... replaced the valve with a twist valve, added some connectors and tubing... jam the tubing in the chamber and open the valve a little...

No longer required, $25 takes it away. Almost full. Pick up only, Brentwood Bay, BC.

Thanks Jim, after reading your post last night I ordered one and it arrived this morning. After work I decided it was time for more work…the fun kind.
So I drilled out a spent casing to fit some 1/4” tubing and finished it off with a short length of surgical tubing and done! Now the 1/2 circle lil handle they give on it hangs right off the safety and it’s good to go. IMG_3275.jpeg
