Barrel Damage

I just bought a M77 Hawkeye in stainless .300 winmag.

The gun was reported to have been dropped from an ATV causing scratches and gouges in the scope, but when I got it I noticed that the barrel at the outer edge of the muzzle had a nice dent with a burr that formed. What are the odds that the barrel was distorted by a fall like this? Likley fell off on a rock, hit the muzzle and then landed on the scope. The guy said that the scope did not lose it's zero. I've heard of bent barrels but that generally needs a major fall to occur?
 
The test is to shoot it at 100 yards. If you get a five-shot group of 1" or less within adjustable distance from the bullseye, then the ding in the muzzle isn't a problem.
 
know anyone with a led sled? load it with sand bags strap the rifle in with bunge cords tie a string around the trigger and stand back to the side. dont trust anyone. its your face that a 300winmag is about to go off near.once shot check the brass for psi signs.then see if it will hold a zero.
 
I doubt the barrel is bent any more than when it left the factory. The ding on the outside of crown is insignificant to the performance of the rifle. Shoot away...
 
I bet it would be fine, they are rifles, they are made to be thrown around and knocked over. I bought a rifle here a while back that was run over by a truck, it broke the buttstock, bent the tang and slighty bent the barrel. Thats from a truck, not falling over and hitting a rock.
 
ding in crown = problem, outside crown= dont really matter.
3@ around 1 or even 2 without lef sled or sand bags are just fine.

He sent pictures of the scope damage and said the gun is in nice shape when I asked if there was any damage or marks. Their was also around 1"x2" of pitting corrosion on the stainless barrel. There were other marks on the barrel from use which is normal for a used gun. The butt pad is splitting a bit too, and there was a worn or scratched area of the camo stock.

He wants to offer a discount so I may take it and then if it shoots straight I would give some back later. If it is damaged rebarrel it with the money. Hopefully for both our sakes it is just fine.
 
Barrels are soft, they bend quite easily. Military rifles from days gone by were often full wood for a reason.
As others have pointed out, if the ding is on the crown and near the muzzle opening, it may affect the accuracy. If the crown is wonky, this also may affect it. Ding on the outside of the crown shouldn't be a problem.
