how do you remove dents from shotgun barrels without a brownells dent raiser.
i looked and could not find any info only sales.can this be done at a reasonable cost? it is only a very small dent.
thanks dave

If you know a machine shop, you can have them make a dent raiser FOR you; it's a simple piece of equipment, just a rod that's been split most of the way into 4 or 6 segments, and threaded for a rod at the split end. Once it's slid into place, you just tighten the rod in to swell the raiser, and that squeezes the dent out.

SDC -- could you tell me more on the split rod --- how can you control where the pressure of the rod bears on if all the splits expand equally? I would worry about just bulging the bbl instead of pushing the dent out.

I need to do this with a few shotguns, including a beater I can practice on, so the mor einfo the better. ie -- how long do you split the rod? 6 inches or so i would guess. i also assume the rod should be relatively snug to the bore to start with.

thanks for any info

Sorry for the hi jack. I have an older Savage Fox 12 bore double that has a very slight dent in the left barrel about 24" from the breech. The previous owner shot the gun alot with the dent with no apparent effect. Is it safe to continue to shoot this gun? Again sorry for nosing in on your thread.

cheers Darryl

I have the same gun with the same type dent Darryl. Mine is a model B. Ive shot about 1000 lead and steel thru it with no effect. FYI.

I figure more steel might just get rid of that dent.......

Had a Parker Trojan with a bad dent (really noticeable) but only shot lead thru it. No troubles.

Like the post above, a small dent is common and although its not optimum, it's not always a recipe for disaster either. Sometimes pushing a dent out makes that area of the barrel weaker too....

It had better be a very small dent if you are continuing to shoot it.I have seen the banana peel effect from the metal "washing out " under a dent and then the barrel coming apart. No one hurt but makes for a rather interesting blunder bust effect. I would definitly get the dent pushed out if it were mine!
