The Remington archives website for model 788 gives the impression that the 7mm-08 was only produced with an 18.5" barrel. Does anyone know if that is true, or if there might be used take-off 22" barrels out there somewhere, and if so, where a guy might find one?

Rem 788 in 7mm-08

Personally, I've never seen a Rem 788 in 7mm-08 with a barrel longer than the 18.5" carbine length. That said, I have one that came with a pretty beat up stock. I picked up a Ramline synthetic for it back when the Ramlines came with a Pachmayr decelerator installed. It dropped right in with no hassle. Thought I'd try it out just as is with no further work. To my surprise, it shoots great just as is topped with an econo Tasco World Class Plus 3-9x44mm scope.

Maybe reconsider the rebarrel of your 788 until you have "put it thru it's paces" or are there other issue with your present barrel on it?

NAA.

It shoots very well with the 18.5"barrel, and I probably won't change it, but was just curious if there were rifles built with factory 22" barrels. I'm getting around 2,800 fps MV with 130 gr BTSP in front of 44 gr Varget, and wondered if a longer barrel would yield better velocities.
