I was wondering if there is an aftermarket barrel for a remington 581. I have done a few searches and found nothing specifically for the 581. There are barrels for the 504, but nothing I have found yet for the 581. I thought maybe those of you who have more experiance may be able to help me with this. I'm not even sure if it would be worth fixing this nice little rifle up but it would be kind of neat to be able to beat my buddy with his "snotted up" ruger when out on the range. I have a little savage/anchutz that I may sell to fund this project if there are barrels out there for this model.
Any info would be great.

What is wrong with the current barrel?
I have a 541, and sent it to Guntech to shorten the barrel by 2 inches.
There has to be barrels out there it is just a matter of how much you want to pay - Lilja comes to mind at probably $400.00

I don't think the barrel is shot out or anything it's just not as accurate as I would like it and I thought it might be a cool project. I figure if I spend $500 or so on it, that would be about the same as puchaseing a cz or somthing that might be more accurate. Instead of having somthing that other people have I would have a plinker that would be different from everybody else, and with any luck it would be accurate as heck...

The Rem 5xx series of actions are popular for building custom silhouette guns from.
I believe one of the first steps with that action is to add a rear action bolt (supposedly pretty easy) and then bedding the action.
You may find it shoots well enough at that point. Maybe have a smith take a good look at what he can do for the trigger.

After that it's grafting on an Anschutz 50.18 trigger, a Shillen Barrel then dropping the whole thing into a Pharr stock ;) Probably a bit further then you'd like to go.

Do the first two steps then shoot it to see what ammo it likes. I'd be surprised if it didn't hang with that 10/22.

I got my 22 back from the gunsmith and he added another action screw and bedded the rifle and opened up the barrel channel a bit and it hasn't changed the way it shoots a whole bunch. The smith took it and shot it before he gave it back to me and with the regular run of the mill 22 ammo you can get anywhere he got groups of about 1" at 50m and with eley club the groups shrunk to .5" at 50m. He had some anshutz heavy barrels he took off some biathalon rifles that I am thinking of getting him to thread the reciever and screw one of these on to see what happens. ...or is this about the best a guy can hope for? I'm not sure if this would help it at all or would I just be spending money for nothing? That being said, it would look pretty cool though.
