If I understand it correctly on the 870 supermag (3.5") for safety reasons, the barrel is not interchangeable with other 870 barrels that won't accept 3.5" shells (2 3/4 or 3" barrels).

I was wondering if this was the same case with the 1187 supermag. Will it swap barrels with other non supermag barrels?

I was musing about getting one in the near future but would like a model that I could easily get a spare barrel for.

The Remington "SuperMags" have different receiver dimensions than the standard 23/4"-3" Mag receivers. They look the same, but are bigger and thus their barrels aren't interchangeable. Unless you plan on doing a lot of goose hunting, the 3.5" SuperMags really aren't that practical. I've got one that I reserve for sea duck/turr hunting and goose hunting, but for the most part, the standard 3" receiver is more than sufficient to meet my hunting needs. But....hey! Do what makes you happy! You never need a reason to buy a new gun! :)

also, less barrels available for the super mag.
I was trying to decide between 3 and 3.5 and that made my decision, I could only find rifled short barrels for the super mag. Like Xman said the 3" is pretty adecuate and more versatile.
