Hey Guys,

Recently purchased a brand new VZ 58 chambered in .223 with a chrome lined barrel. Upon returning home I noticed something on the end of the barrel. It looks like a polished area, but sticks out as different from the rest of that area of the end of the barrel, as it is noticeable when looking closely. Why would that spot be there and what is it? It doesn't feel coarse or rough or anything. There were also two nicks in the front sight post that look like it got banged on something and chipped off the coating in the 2 spots.

1) Can anyone tell me why there would be that spot on the end of the barrel, what it is, and if it's anything to worry about?

2) What can I do about those 2 chip marks on the front sight?

Thanks guys!

I want my 3 minutes back.

Are you serious ? Chips ? it sucks but it is what it is. The barrel thing is obviously nothing.

lol. those 2 chips are from a sight adjustment tool (normal). the colour at the end of the barrel is what you paid for. its the chrome lining.

Ahh i did not even realized he did not know it was the chrome lining. I need to adjust my noob-o-meter lol.

I thought there was a polished spot in the area.

I know the barrel is chrome lined, but why is there a weird polished spot that stands out from the rest of the end of the barrel? It's inconsistent and I just didn't know why.

its normal for chrome lined barrels to look like that. the chips suck but are hard to avoid with the cheesy tool you have to use. i have the same marks from adjusting mine myself. i not happy about it but i got over it.. happy shooting. cheers!

I wasn't too concerned about the chips on the front sight except I wanted to know if there was any way to prevent the spots from developing rust.

But my main concern was why the barrel looked the way it did in that one spot. Just seemed weird to me. Then again I'm not as knowledgeable as a lot of people on here. But I don't have anyone to ask. I'm just learning and I appreciate any help I get.

Remember: A noob who is asking "dumb" questions and trying to learn is better than a brainless, self-righteous libtard who's planning on voting for Justin Trudeau in the next election.

vz58 isn't a collectors gun so a few blemish are acceptable . i don't think it will develop into rust , its just cosmetic , try using steel wool and oil it .

It's fine, unless your planning on keeping it outside. Those two little dings shouldn't rust, just keep it oiled. As for the barrel it is also fine, it's just part of the chroming process. Throw a muzzle brake on it and you'll never see it. Shoot it, clean it, oil it. My .223 VZ is awesome, I installed the AR mag adapter. It works great with most AR mags, I usually use the LAR 15 mags and I've never had an issue.

Right on guys, thanks very much for all your comments and checking out the pics for me.

On a side note: The cleaning rod that came with the cleaning kit is plastic coated but the connections are metal where one rod piece screws into the other to make it longer. Do I need to buy a crown protector/muzzle cap or whatever it is, to protect the crown when cleaning?

Shoving the brush from muzzle to the chamber just goes against everything inside of me, lol. What are your best cleaning practices and what patches work best? The guy at the LGS told me that the .22-270 patches work good, but I've overheard them telling other people things that I literally laughed at. They don't always know what they're talking about. BTW, this IS a chrome-lined barrel. I use Gunzilla CLP in my other guns and it seems to work great. Smells awesome too.

I clean mine from the muzzle to the breech. There's a big opening for crud to fall out there when the firing pin block and magazine are removed. After every range trip, I soak the bore with Wipe-Out. Let it sit for about 10 minutes. Two or three scrubs with a bore brush, then patch it until the patch comes out clean. (I use .30cal patches.) Disassemble the firing pin block and clean thoroughly, although I'm having trouble getting the firing pin completely out of the carrier. Then, the top cover comes off to clean the piston and the orifice from the barrel. Copious lubrication on the firing pin block, rails that it rides on, and the piston. Reassembly, cycle a few times, and a complete wipe off of excesses.

Usually takes me about 10 minutes.
