Hello fellow gun nutters, I've seen this thread many time and read through them but I want some feed back for my scenario. I have a build in the process and this is the specs pierce MI multi flat comp action and 27" match shilen barrel, heres the question I bought the AI 2.0 for compactability but I think the 27" barrel is working against me, also I want to start going past 1000yrds and seeing how far I can get, a friend suggested cutting down to 24 w/ a brake but that puts me close to 27". Think I will just leave it but don't know:confused:

A rifle with a heavy 27" barrel pretty much restricts you to the bench or prone. My M-700 with it's 28" barrel and a quality fiberglass stock is about 19 pounds and very muzzle heavy; sufficiently so that off-hand is not possible, and I'm not terribly wimpy. A shorter barrel will make a better position rifle, and will probably only cost you a few clicks of elevation adjustment at long range, although that can be mitigagted through your choice of bullet. If you intend to hunt with this thing, a shorter barrel is a gimme, with proper balance being your goal.

Excellent post, that's the kind of answers I'm looking for

Boomer nailed it. Build the rifle for balance, and all else will fall into place. You could go as short as 20 inches in a .308 with little to no ill effects. What stock are you running, and what is the barrel contour at?

The AI 2.0 isn't exactly a lightweight stock, and, I have to assume you are running a bi-pod as well. By contour, I meant the thicknes, or diameter of the barrel. There are a few guys running that similar outfit to 20" barrels, but I would recommend starting your chop at either 24" or 22" depending on what you think the balance will be. Remove your bi-pod for this estimate. Find the balance point on the rifle as it sits, I would guess, depending on contour, it my be up to four inches in front of the triggerguard. Balance points vary with opinions, some like the front action screw, or barrel lug, others like the triggerguard. The point is, this will help you determine how much barrel to chop off. Subtract the point as it is now, to where you want it to be, and that will give you a rough estimate as to how much to chop.

My rifle is currently in a 2.0 with a 21.75 inch barrel m40 contour.(heavy) With nightforce scope and all the bells its at 17 pounts. very well balanced and compact. I have carted it around on hunting trips. Its heavy but I don't push the bush when I hunt I have a hill I sit on and pick my shots. Anyways I shoot out to 1000 regularly have shot further. Shoot a 175 gr berger load thats going at 2740. For what I do which is mostly tactical comps and stuff its great. Heavy to lug for hunting but because its shorter i do it anyways the Eberlstock pack helps for longer walks. and it packs up in a small neat little case when its all folded up. Threaded, but not braked. Doesn't need it.
