I have an old side by side shotgun and I want to reduce the barrel length.
I talk with different person and every one has is one perception of the law

Minimum barrel length is 18.5 inch OR Overall shotgun length is 26 inch…

After a discussion with the “Canadian Firearm Center” they told me that I can modify my shotgun but the firearms should remain into the same category (non-restricted) and after the modification the shotgun need to be verified by an CFA agent

Does some have gone to this process….????

Can I reduce my barrel until an overall of 26 inch ???

Definition of a Restricted Firearm
According to the Criminal Code, a restricted firearm is:
· A handgun that is not a prohibited firearm ;
· A semi-automatic, centre-fire firearm with a barrel length less than 470 mm that is not a prohibited firearm;
· A firearm that can fire after being reduced, by folding, telescoping or otherwise, to an overall length of less than 660 mm; and
· Any firearm prescribed under the Criminal Code regulations to be restricted (including some long guns).

OK, the short version is you can alter your gun, but you have to keep the beast compliant with BOTH of those dimentions.

You may hack the barrels down to 18 inches, and you may reduce the stock length to an OAL of 26 inches. You can not go below either number.

I never could figure out why a manufactured bbl could be shorter than 18.5" (ie. those little .410 backpackers with the 12" bbl) but you can't cut one down yourself. Seems to me if you keep the overall length to 26" you should be able to, logically. Wrong! Hmmm...

the law clearly states you can not cut a barrel to less then 18.5" it becomes prohib. you also can not cut the stock off to make the total less then 26".

however companys can build them less then 18". like the 12" IGA backpacker. which is still non restricted since the total lengh is over 26".

Or the 14" Norinco shotty as sold by Marstar:

In one breath the CFC says you can't cut a barrel below 18", and another that you don't have to notify them of barrel length changes.........

Really? Are you suggesting that the CFC are not using obvious logic in their policies (read: Laws)?... hummm... :D

a minor correction: It dosn't matter whether you cut the stock or the barrel- it still must be over 26"

so for instanceyou can replace the stock with a pistol grip as long as the total is over 26"
