Not exactly a precision rifle question, but I thought I'd ask here anyhow?I am thinking about getting a Rem 7615 for coyote hunting mainly.(if they come down to a reasonable price?)I was wondering how much difference in velocity I could expect between the 18"carbine and the 22"sporter barrels, and what,if anything significant, that might translate to downrange?

Also I am wondering if I was playing around at the range and emptying the mag in rapid fire would this be damaging to the barrel?

Depending on the load and bullet I think you would have a difference of about 100 f/s, maybe a bit more..

As to the rapid firing - that does wear a barrel quicker than slow firing... many years ago I saw a 6mm-284 and a .257 Weatherby with the throats considerably worn and rough after only 100 rounds through the barrels... both owners thought they could quickly fireform 100 brass and basically sat there firing one after the other... two barrels ruined quickly...

Thanks for the reply Gt.I can certainly live with 100fps loss.As for the rapid fire mag emptying,it's quite unlikely that I would even do that more than once a year or so just for kicks. It would primarily be for hunting and might see 100-200 rds/yr down the tube at most between hunting and targets.

Hi grinrgrn

I'm a bit off the mark here but I've been reading a book entitled "High Power Rifle Accuracy" by Douglas E Arnold pub 2006 by Stoeger publishing co. and one chapter touches upon the rapid firing issue. The author claims that by allowing a barrel to cool (5 min) between rounds and by cleaning it properly , continually improving accuracy, never mind barrel life, can be extended to beyond 5500 to 8500 rds !

Other accounts I've read give a barrel no more than a 3000 - 3500 rd normal life! I take this to imply that careful use can add a LOT of years to a barrel's life at high accuracy and that, by implication, careless (rapid fire) use will surely shorten it.

7615
It's 16.5'' barrel overall 37.5'' with a 1''recoil pad that's not needed.
So I'm going to remove it an put a thin replacement on it, 36.5'' overall.
5.6 mags fit it so it's going to be my carry when I walk my dogs.

thanks Mark,
I understand that proper cleaning and cool down period between rounds along with proper break-in procedure of a new rifle is the best way to assure longlived barrels, however I was just curious as to if fooling around on the very odd occassion and going Rambo just for fun might have serious effects on accuracy and barrel life.I have no intentions of burning through mag after mag in a single outing,in fact,I'd be quite happy with a 4-5 rd mag for my purposes. But the fact is,with a 10rd mag,and being just a big boy with a new toy,I'm sure I'll waste some ammo on occasion, lol.I'm just an old 7600 fan and a coyote hunting addict and have no delusions of it being a serious tack driver, though I'm more than happy with the groups I get from my 7600 30-06.I just wouldn't want to ruin the barrel prematurely through careless/foolish use.
