well my smith *gunco's Jason Spencer* called to tell me my new Pac-Nor barrel is ordered and will have a slight taper to .930 at the muzzle. my question is the barrel is comeing in a 28" length is this good for a 300Win Mag in a 1-10 twist or should i have it shortened to 26" if i stick with a brake added it will put the barrel length at roughly 30" it seems kinda long and will make it difficult to transport in a case *the current case just barely fits it with 24" bbl* but will it be better for accuracy longer (28") or shorter (26")

longer the better I say get a bit more speed for longRange shooting and that is alwoay a good thing!

thats what i was think but when i add the brake it'll bring me t oa 30" bbl and then i am gonna have to con thew wife into letting me buy a case to carry it around in cause the case i have now only leaves me with 1.5" of extra room, and thats with a 24" bbl:eek:

Shorter = stiffer = more accurate. Generally benchresters will go for the shortest barrel they can get away with. For LR shooting with a .308, it's quite long as the 308 isn't fast enough out of a short barrel. For 100, 200 or 300m shooting with a 6mmbr, it's quite short

his rifle is a 300WM with a .930 at the muzzle I think it would be stiff!

the shortest I would go with the 300WM is 26"I like my Magnums to have a nice long barrel to burn all that powder in

You won't make too many friends at Connaught with a muzzle brake:p See the rules for F Class on the DCRA web page. So the barrel is coming in at 28", couldn't find a 30" or even a 34" ehh:p Longer is better for long range, your 28" will work better then the 24".
As far as the case goes you have three choices. 1. a new case. Choices 2&3
involve a hacksaw. Cut barrel or cut a hole in the case for the barrel to stick out. I would go with a new case:D

Muzzle break?Why?
Like someone said already,if you start long you can always go shorter. My guess is somewhere between 26 and 28 would do you just fine.

Go long, don't like it, cut it later. I prefer longer barrels in my LR table top shooters.

Flambeau makes an oversized case for $35 so there is little issue getting a larger case.

thats the case i have now it was actully $48 at CT. with the choate USS and enough spacers to fit my LOP it leaves me with less then 1.5" of extra room
i have REALLY long arms and Really big hands

un fortunatly it will also double as a hunting gun so lead is a bit out of the questionLOL the brake's main purpose is 75% LCF and 25% recoil reduction
Edit to add i might go with the 28" and brake and see if it will fit in a decent drag bag or borrow a sewing machine and make my own

You mean 75% wuss factor and 25% recoil?;)
Are you seriously worried about recoil?Perhaps you should fire someone elses gun before you wreck this one with a muzzle break you don't need.

:p i have fired it got 60 rounds through it in 2x 3 hour sittings and the recoil isnt an issue, my wife beats me harder then the gun kicks, its the vertical jump i am trying to get rid of. so :p
and besides brakes look ######y:D

I got 28.5" out of my Gaillard barrel before the break.Chambered in 300 Win Mag.I would say go as long as you can.At the present length with the break the rifle fits my pelican case.(JUST BARELY)

For short range BR, most cartridges get their best velocity at about 18".
There is also a weight concern with light varmint rifles, but a 300 mag is not likely to be seen on a short range BR line!
28" will give you a decent sighting plane if you decide to stick some irons on it at some point also, maybe something to consider.

I wouldn't worry about the barrel being not stiff enough with that configuration.
Many 1,000 yard BR riflees have close to the same taper, if not a bit longer.
