Im a casual trap shooter. It is fun to do on the farm... I have only used my friends bird 12 ga... I have a 12 ga pump with a 20" smooth bore barrel

My max distance would be about 35 yards before they are too far to tag ? Should I get a 28 in barrel also ?

If you are going to actually shoot trap, rather that just shoot clays thrown by hand or with your own thrower on the farm, a longer barrel, with at least a mod choke, with be a significant advantage over a 20" with an open choke.

A 32" barrel just puts you 12" closer to the clay, that's all. There are issues with balance, swing etc that a serious trap shooter is concerned with as well. Most trap guns are choked full, mod or imp mod. That holds the shot together and puts it out there where it can do some good.

At a real trap range, you stand behind the launcher quite a ways - that's why you need a full choke. In your case, you're much closer to the launcher, so your open choke is fine.

Yup.....unlike rifles, barrel length has little to no effect of velocity with shotguns shooting lead shot. Barrel length is all about balance and swing.

Thanks for the good info guys ! I will pick up a full choke barrel for this bad boy. I love the way it feels as is !

Does anyone know where to find a 20" full choke barrel for a mossburg 500 ?

why not look for a barrel that will accept chokes that way you can change them depending what you using the shotgun for I shoot Trap and skeet with a rem 1100 28" barrel use mod choke for trap score in the 20 to 23 range and skeet choke for skeet score the same

That would be ideal I have only done a quick search tho and im very pick about the look of my shotgun lol

You can get a competent gunsmith to thread your existing barrel to accept chokes. Yon can run flush chokes to maintain the look you like or pimp out with extended.
Cost should be around $70 + your chokes.

You shoot a Mossberg 500, and you are picky about the looks of your shotgun.

I like what I like, you like what you like... I could go buy a nice browning 725 today if I wanted to knowing its a great gun but I hate the looks...

Simple black smooth 12 ga pump. Love the way it looks don't need ribbing or any crazy sights. Bead works just fine. Id say looks are 49% of the selection process...

Maybe for my next precision rifle I will get something expensive and ugly that works the same as a gun half the price so I may please you.

Best advise so far. 2 months advanced booking for smith.. guess this wont be happening soon ! lol

You could call Mil-Arm in Edmonton. They usually have a bucket of different length mossberg barrels for sale. about $100-$150.
