I purchased a first gen Steyr M9 over the holidays, and as many of you may know, the M series Steyr pistols had to be fitted with a 106mm barrel to meet Canadian barrel length regulations. For some reason,my pistol left Austria with a 115mm barrel, which protrudes noticeably and makes this pistol look like a rebarreled prohib. I'm playing with the idea of having my local Gunsmith(Gunco) cut the barrel down to 106mm and recrown.I also have a Steyr M40-A1 with the normal Canadian 106mm barrel and it only protrudes a small amount. Has anyone else had this done?...is there a legal procedure? this pistol is about as accurate as it gets and to be honest this is only for cosmetic reasons. Any input would be great.

You'd be fine from the legal standpoint. And the gunsmith can confirm this. They won't do work for you that results in producing a prohibited device as it's THEIR neck on the block as well as yours.

If the registration specifies the barrel length you will be under an obligation to advise the registry of the new length.

Actually, if the registration currently says it is anything other than 115mm you are probably supposed to get the record corrected, but if the registration says 106mm you won't have to tell them anything if you get the barrel cut to match.
