Does a 20" barrel on 10/22 have a advantage over the 18 1/2 barrel??? I would think no but I maybe wrong. just curious deciding on 10/22 RR or Deluxe model not sure wich stock I like better. I will not change stock out for a Butler, or Hogue or Barracuda etc. Just looking for a plinker and gopher killer

I believe the optimum 22 barrel length is 18". The walnut on the deluxe model is sweet, I had one at one time. If you are not going to mod out, I'd go with that or a stainless synthetic.

I think I read on Rimfire Central at one time that 16.5" was optimum. But I've been known to have a drink now and again while I've read things.

Really? well #### the bed! 18" stuck out in my mind...

My bad. I am actually going to build with a VQ 16.5" carbon fiber... good to hear! :D

IMHO, it makes no difference directly to accuracy, just velocity. I've read that there is something about when the bullet breaks the speed of sound (goes from above it to below) that it starts to flutter a bit and looses a bit of accuracy though. I guess that could have negative effects either way depending on ammo velocity and distance you are shooting.
From personal experience, I've never noticed a difference in accuracy from shorter to longer barrels.

This is the reason that match ammo is made to lower velocity , to counteract the effects of the sound barrier
I was challenged about the barrel length thing one day becuase my Anschutz match barrels are so long!

the long barrel length itself has nothing to do with velocity , but is needed for the longer sighting radius, as well as providing a better balanced rifle for offhand shooting

Some of the newer Anschutz have short barrels and long bloop tubes. Of course they also have weights to add to balance the rifle now that the barrel is shorter.

Optimal lenght is around the 16" range as stated.

However, many benchrest guns that you see will have a longer barrel and I believe the reasos they have the longe barrel is

1. More weight: Steadier on the rest.

2. Barrel harmonics. I believe a tuner is more effectice on the longer barrels.

Yup, with the bloop tube you can get the sight radius, and the weights let you get the balance where you want it.
I'm old school, my match rifles were made in the the 60's!

Barrel tuners have been around since the beginning of precision shooting, and the jury is continually out on them, then back in, depending on the thought of the day!
