Barrel length

It's not a cartridge I would want anything shorter than 18 inches and the money you will have to spend could pay for a nice scope.
 
As others have said, not legal to shorten factory, but perfectly legal to have a barrel made any length you want.
We have done some really odd ones in the past. An 8.5" 50 BMG barrel probably takes the cake.
My go to hunting rifle now is a 13" barrelled 300 Win Mag. Surprisingly velocity drop was not nearly as bad as expected. 200 gr bullets at 2650 FPS.

And not one critter complained about the velocity loss. I’d like a 14” 300wsm... some day.

pounder, you didn't ask, but I have to say I agree with guntech. Actually, I wouldn't go shorter than 20" in 30-06! Unless you have something very specific in mind in terms of handloads, the muzzle blast I've seen from an 18" 30-06 with factory ammunition is very unpleasant.
