Barrel Mounted Chronographs other than Magneto speed

If you mean the sporter version, then upgrade to the v3.
The v3 bayonet is a decent piece. The display is a bit lacking, but an adapter to your phone would probably be a worthwhile improvement.
I find it to be of good quality and it functions reliably.

Cheaply made? Really? I have the Sporter and I think it is robustly made. Unless you’re really careless with it I don’t see how it would break.

While there's always improvements that can be made to any product, I find the Magnetospeed V3 a quality Chrono. I've had mine for years, I think it's a pretty solid unit.

I don't know of any better barrel mounted alternatives. You can always go labradar.

Agree 100%. I've had mine (V3) for years as well and always obtained reliable velocities. My has friend has a Labradar and there are times when he did not get readings and borrowed my MS. Unlike me he is a tech savvy guy so it was set up properly. Also the Labradar eats batteries like crazy and also be careful in windy conditions, if it blows over it could be down for the count.

I have 2 buddies with Magnetospeeds and neither of them are happy with them.

One of them recently bought a light curtain model that links the data to his Cell phone and he quite likes that.

One problem with Magnetospeed is how they affect barrel harmonics, so you cant reliably assess groups while confirming velocity... At least with it fitted to the barrel. Tubbs has a bar fitted to his for end that holds his Magnetospeeds instead of fitting it to the barrel for his ELR rig.

Why are they not happy with them? It also depends how use use your chronograph. I don't assess groups and confirm velocity at the same time. If the groups are sh!t I don't care what the velocity is but that is me.

get your buddy to order a recoil activated trigger (RAT) from Tac Canada for his Labradar.
to be honest, I was beginning to hate my LR until I bought the RAT. it was a super finicky thing that seemed to miss 1 in 10 shots if your setup wasn't perfect. the RAT makes them 100% reliable. braked rifles, unbraked magnums, muzzle 8" further away than you have setup in the menu, it doesn't matter now - it registers every shot. I'd have to check my shot counter, but I've put a bit over 200rds past the LR since getting a RAT this fall and not one has failed to register.

They were never intended to maintain good accuracy with one mounted on a barrel. They have a single purpose and that's to give a consistently accurate velocity reading, under all conditions.

I saw a video on YouTube with a guy who made an Arca mount for his Magnetospeed. Seemed pretty straight forward, I just haven’t had the time to try it.

Thanks for confirming the obvious problem.

When developing loads, we are looking for two things.... accuracy and velocity... We need to correlate one to the other for the information collected to be meaningful.

Clearly keeping the unit off the barrel will allow a guy to do that, but on the barrel is a non starter.

There's an adapter for that...

And a debate on whether or not the Magnetospeed bayo affects the bullet after it leaves the barrel amongst other things:

Personally, I like having a Labradar around when I'm doing load dev, so there are no issues with harmonics and I can get chrono data at the same time I'm shooting groups. But my Magnetospeed works great on crowded zero ranges at matches when I just need to take a quick reading to confirm MV.

I've had plenty of problems with my Labradar as well. It needs a clear unobstructed view of the flight path. It needs to be clear of muzzle blast. At best, it frequently does not register all shots, and that get frustrating really quick during load development with small batches of each load. I ladder test with 1 round per with match guns, so I need reliability.

I find I prefer different types of chronographs under different conditions.

I'll use a light curtain in the basement for a pellet gun, but cant use it at a public range if anyone else is there, because I need to clear the range to adjust it. Labradar wont work in the basement.

On the farm, I prefer a light curtain when I cant risk not reading the speed, but once a load is established, I prefer the labradar. If it gets 3 out of 5 I still know whats going on.

If the labradar is set up correctly, it doesn't miss shots. Setting it up incorrectly isn't the units fault. I have been there as well.

Lot of complaints about 2 different reasonably priced units that a few years ago would be an incredible dream. There are much better options out there. Of course then the complaining about being priced out of a hobby will commence.

What are the better options other than a Labradar or Magnetospeed available to the average Joe.
