Barrel porting - worth the effort on shorties?

Possibly the dumbest question on this board, but has anyone bothered to port an 18.5 inch or shorter barrel on the 870 or Norinco?

Was the recoil reduction worth the effort?

Would you recommend it, or recommend against it?

I had my 14" Norc done...I would estimate the recoil w/3" slugs to be reduced by about 40% (thank God!).

Mind if I ask who and how much$$$?

I'm planning on getting a Norc 14 inch and slapping a Knoxx Compstock on it. If the barrel porting works without too many drawbacks, I'll consider it.

Before you ask, I want a gun that is both effective and shootable. It's no good to me if the recoil is so oppresive that it sits in the safe.

40% is pretty substantial - sounds like it is really worth the effort. Have you had any negative consequences as a result of this porting ? For example, how has the muzzle flash changed ? Is there a large increase in noise ?

I had it done through Hunter's in Surrey, I'll let them quote you a price. And yes, it is a wee bit louder, I think (it was pretty frikken loud to start with). The only real drawback is the mess it leaves on the top of the barrel. As far as the muzzle flash, well, it had a big fireball before and it still does! :D

And yes, it was worth every penny. It was a bear to shoot before, and bordered on no fun. Now it is quite reasonable!

Porting will be an option on the new 12.5" and 14" barrels that should be ready soon. Yeah, I know. Stop laughing!!!
My 12.5 kicks like hell with slugs. Porting it soon.
