Barrel porting

With light target loads I don't have a problem with ported barrels. They're just not that loud. With a 3" goose load in a blind you wouldn't be hunting with me!We've got one guy in our club who fires off a goose load every once in a while in his ported gun. He's not making any friends.

On the skeet/trap filed I really dont mind it as long as I already have my hearing protection on.

You can sit at the other end of the field when we are waterfowl hunting though and its not just because you stink!:D

This is what I needed to know. I am looking at a crossover sporting/field shotgun, either a 525 grade 1 sporting, or a GTS. While I would put more rounds through it at the range, I would also take it into the goose fields. The 525 is ported, while the GTS isn't.

The 525 field isnt ported but I have only seen it in 28" barrels?????

The GTS comes unported and in 30" barrels. That would be my choice but if 28" tubes are col for you the 525 is a beautiful gun. Hard to go wrong really.

Having just finished three days of shooting instruction where one third of the participants had ported barrels I can definitely say they are much louder.

If you showed up in a goose blind with a ported gun I wouldn't want to sit beside you.

I've owned ported guns and non-ported guns. I don't think barrel porting is worth the trouble.

The 525 Sporting Grade 1 comes in 28, 30 or 32" barrels, is 3" chambered, and unfortunately is ported.

That is the one complaint I have with my 525 Sporting - the ported barrels are noticeably louder than unported, and don't really add as much benefit for target shells as, say, adding 8oz of weight to the shotgun.

If I was to put a number to it, I'd say they seem to be 30% louder than non-ported. I would go with the 525 Field myself for hunting.
