barrel porting

I did mine myself on a spare barrel, I don't notice any differance shooting with them, but they look okay. If I did it again I would index the patterns around another 15 degrees each way. I used a 1/8 drill. Indexing the holes 15 degrees each line and staggering them works good. I did the lines at 15, 30,and 45 degrees from top dead centre. If I did it again I think I would go 30, 45, and 60 degrees. That is because the next barrel I plan to do will have ghost ring sights and I will need the extra room to clear the sight. Then I de burred the inside and honed it. (I have a honing machine at work so that was makes it easy.

Nice clean job but that is alot of holes.

I used a milling machine, and that is an old barrel that I was prepared to sacrifice. As I said I didn't notice any differance in the recoil and am unsure if I will bother to do it on a good barrel. I would definately go smaller on the holes and maybe space them out a little further. As has been pointed out to me that is a weak point and the more metal between the holes the better. Although it isn't terribly difficult, it isn't a job for a pistol drill, or even a drill press. If you are going to try it, do like I did and do a test first even if it's on a piece of black pipe, because once it's drilled you're stuck with it.

I've done a couple on a milling mach. worked out good. A buddy of mine did one and did not deburr the inside well enough and hung a wad up in the choke. Unfortunately the next shell did quite a job on the muzzle.........big bulge.

Be sure to deburr the inside well !!!!
