I am very new to shotguns and have a couple of questions

I know the longer the barrel the more accurate the gun but with shotguns I see most are sold in 26", 28" and 30"
Does 2" make much of a difference ?
Is different lengths used for different types of hunting ?
What is the best length for skeet shooting ?

Thanks

Accuracy is usually a term reserved for rifles and handguns unless you're talking about slug shooting shotguns. In a pump or semi the shorter barrels are handier which is good unless you are pass shooting ducks then you may want a 28 or 30 inch barrel for a smoother swing and less muzzle blast. A couple inches in barrel length makes no difference in velocity. Usually the shorter barrels are favoured for grouse, woodcock and other game which is hunted in thick cover. Most skeet guns are shorter, 24,26 inches for fast handling. Shotgun and rifle barrels have grown steadily shorter beginning with the advent of smokeless powder in the early 1900's. An upland shotgun considered ideal in 1930 might be considered much too long by many hunters today. It's all about what feels best in your hands for the kind of hunting you like but generally shorter is better than longer.
