I want to thread the end of my Norc SKS for a threaded flash-hider, but want to do it on the lathe.

How hard is it to remove the barrel for this job? Assuming I can do it myself, should replacing be done by a smith to ensure proper head space?

Is your barrel threaded in, or pressed and pinned? Either can be removed, but either can be a real pain, and the proper tools would be needed. It should be possible to hold the receiver in a 4 jaw chuck, rather than removing the barrel. Use an indicator to get the breech end of the barrel dialed in.
Reinstalling the barrel should not change headspace. It will be no worse or better than before the barrel was pulled.

My buddy has already bent a 1/2" extension on his 20 ton press trying to remove a pinned Nork barrel... Just removing the barrel pin took everything his press had. Can not get the damn barrel to budge yet! Norinco sure pressed them in nice and tight!

I have only unscrewed one SKS barrel - and it was a barrel I was salvaging from a demilled receiver. It was a pig to remove.
It would really be easier to leave the receiver in place while the muzzle is being threaded.

i know you didnt ask this but it sounds like you gonna spend a great amount just for a FH, wouldnt it be cheaper if you got (kasat) to make a custom FH for you instead?

How deep is your headstock? Can you run the barrel through with the receiver on the outside of the HS? If you have the room, and a spider clamp on the spindle inlet.

A number of years ago I bought a "slip on" flash hider for my Russian SKS (from Cabellas before our new import laws). You just press it on and turn it until a tab locks in to cleaning rod and to the back of the sight. It is a snug press fit so I don't use the cleaning rod. You'll get the idea by my pictures. I dusted it off so you can see it. Forgot I even had it until I saw your post.
