i just bought a smith and wesson m&p 9. my dad was wanting a gun that he could swap calibers in, say from 9 to 45. i was thinking that all the smith m&p's are the same internal parts are they not? so why couldn't i buy a new barrel and swap them out 9 for 45 among the few other parts that i would need to buy. or would it be cheaper just to buy a new gun. if anybody's wondering it cost me $847.50 including tax.

thanks in advance
nate

p.s my first gun that I own. and the first handgun in the family. wooohooo been waiting for this for 5 or 6 years

WOOHOO congrats! as to the swapping i havent the slightest clue.... i would imagine that the mag wells would be a different size for the 45 cal ... entirely possible i could be wrong

If you bought a 40 M&P you'd need the barrel, recoil spring assembly and magazines to convert it to 9mm, or just the barrel to convert it to .357 Sig, you can't convert it to 45 because of the longer mag well. Even for the 40 to 357 Sig conversion the barrels are about $260 and really you're not gaining much. You're much better off spending the money you'd put into the conversion on a reloading set up for the pistol you have. Incidently, while the 45 M&P has a longer magwell, the grip is almost exactly the same size. Good choice on the M&P 9, I love mine and I'm about 6500 rounds into it.

nice gun congarts!

it couldn't work because the frame is smaller on a 9/40 guns...S&W had to come up with a larger frame for the .45
