I need to have my barrel threaded for a muzzle break. What would be a fair going rate for this procedure by a gunsmith?

What barrel? How much precision? Can the barrel be removed from the receiver? These can make a big difference in time, and therefore, cost.
I just installed a brake on my own barrel.
Ran it through the spindle, indicated the breech end in the spider, used a plug gauge in the bore to indicate the muzzle end in the 4 jaw chuck, less than .001" total indicated runout. Cut the threads carefully, until the brake would screw on without any wiggle. Crowned the muzzle. Installed the brake, bored it out to clearance diameter, .010" per side, twenty thou total. Installed the barrel on the receiver, removed the brake and shaved its shoulder so that it would index.
Took a couple of hours, all in.
Or, the breech of the barrel could be held in the chuck, the muzzle on the tail center, the threads cuts, and the crown touched up as needed. Use peel or crush washers to index, if required. This simpler method will work, particularly if the brake has a fairly large passage; the first method is more precise.
So, the cost could run from $50 to perhaps $200. Half hour vs two hours.

Seeing as you are setting up a precision rifle, my inclination would be go with method one, although you could likely get away with two, particularly if the brake bore is on the generous side. Of course, if it is really generous, the brake loses efficiency.
If you have to mail the barrel to the 'smith, add another $40 - $50 for the round trip postage.

Don't take a change with this, it can easily be messed up, let the right people do this job for you. If you go to the website of Alberta Tactical Rifle Supply it will tell you that the cost to do this is $85.

I think you should ask what it costs to fix you car and why should your GS charge less? The car guys that I go to charge about 85/hour and I recently accused them of charging more than my dentist! I don't mind if my dentist goes to Florida every year but I don't think I should pay for the entire trip. If you want it done right find a quality GS that charges a fair price and be happy. From the time in the door until out this is a good two hour job. Ask your mechanic what it would cost. Yes guns may be fun to work on (in the beginning) but the guy still has to pay the bills.

It is not uncommon to charge $150 if one dials the bore in, threads, indexes and fits and bores the brake... I am sure someone out there can just 'thread' the barrel for any screw on sloppy fit crush washer type for a lot less.

I just got a barrel threaded. I checked out a couple of gunsmiths and how they set up jobs on their lathes. I paid $20 more for the guy who took the longest setting up and the only one who owns a 3 axis CNC lathe. Totally worth the running around time.
