Can anyone recommend a barrel vise for removing barrels from bolt actions rifle. Looking for one that can remove factory barrels. I know some are only recommended for switch barrel rifles which are obviously not torqued to the extent of a factory rifle. Any input appreciated.

You can make one or have one made... this was made from 2 inch bar stock and faced to be 1.5 inches thick. The hole is 1.5 inches and I use steel bushings split in half to fit the barrels... lots of weight to it and bolted to a solid bench.

a pipe fitters vise with steel or aluminium inserts will work . you will want to use a small amount of rosin in the inserts.

I made a vise just recently ... some thick plate, the eye part of a big truck leaf spring that i split in two.. then made some jaws outa 1.5" aluminum round ...drilled then bored a hole on my sherline lathe

grips real good, but it took me awhile to get the aluminum off the barrel... left a lite alum marking that was on there like the devil... simple green took it off

I'm really diggin guntech's vise... man, thats a nice one !!

Appreciate the input. Seems like the majority recommends making one. I don't have the materials or tools/machines to do that. For those using inserts, are you making them yourself?...I guess it wouldn't be hard if you have the materials and tools but I don't so it would buying a vise makes more sense for me anyway.
Dennis, for some reason your picture of the vise is not coming up.

"...the majority recommends making one..." Best if you have the tools. Buying one(Brownell's) can get pricey. In any case, you need more than just the vise. You need an action wrench too. Use anythng else and you'll twist the receiver into an oddly shaped paperweight.
"...lots of weight..." Made one out of SPS, long ago, that weighed 50 pounds. snicker.

I use one like guntech but made from 1.5" square. I mould epoxy bushing to fit with a mould not with the vice and I do not use Brownells system, far too difficult. After a few barrels are moulded I can usually find one that fits well enough so I don't mould every barrel that I touch. The odd barrel may take a bit of rosin if it slips but no barrel has beaten me yet. I tighten the two cap screws with a standard 1/2" ratchet, no need for three foot bars etc. If you get a job that you know will take a new bushing you need to allow a day to get it made.
