Who, preferably in Ontario does quality barrel work at a reasonable price. I.E. forcing cones, back boring, Chokes installed or opened up. Anyone had any actual experience with a Smith that does this sort of work?

The best of the best in Canada: Steve Milton, Precision Arms. Be carefull of backboring! Thinning the barrels of metal can result in disastrous concequences as seen in the US by a number of tinkerers. European guns by law are all proof tested, not so in NA. Beretta went to a larger OD for their Optima Bore guns to keep the same thickness of metal. Also, Beretta had chrome-moly bores. If it is a Beretta you want to overbore, you loose the the protection of the chrome-moly!

Regards,
Henry;)

I don't think that will be a problem with this one. There is lots of "Meat" to work with.

Did you try Makinson? Or were his prices out of the world? I think he quoted me $150 to do the forcing cones on my W.W. Greener which I didn't want to mess with on a gun like that.

Really, I would avoid steve milton at almost all costs. I have never had any bad dealings with him but several of our club members have. He does do good work when he actually bothers to do it. He also won't be cheap.

I have only visited his shop once, last year, lets say I wasn't impressed. This was a tuesday morning at 9:30-10:00, he was clearly intoxicated and his breath reeked of it. He and his wife were also clearly having some disagreements while we were there.

I will however say he was custom making a pair of matched SxS and he was part way through the engraving, beautiful guns, he is obviously a very skilled gunsmith, just seems to have some personal demons.

I would suggest going to Jason Spencer of Gunco in Nepean, just outside of ottawa, he does excellent work, fast turnaround, and very reasonable prices.

Steve Holborn in Warren, Ontario. Superb workmanship w/o getting fleeced like some of todays shops. I'll post his phone # for you as soon as I find it. He has done all kinds of work for me from rebluing to making parts that were obsolete and I would trust him with anything I own.:)

May not always agree with Henry, however any barrel, choke work I've need over the past 20+ years has always gone to Steve. Mark me down as a very satisfied and loyal customer.

Personal demons ? What talented artist doesn't ? :D I knew a very talented German gunsmith, now long-departed, that wouldn't even attempt to checker a stock until he'd had a couple of beers. Steadied the hands and the nerves he said ! His work was absolutely top-notch, and he had the odd donnybrook going with the wife too.

I can honestly say I know a few who seem to march to the beat of their own drums ... Hell, some days it appears like they've got a whole orchestra behing them ! ;)

Oh yeah, Jason does good work as well !

I think Steve's probably alright at the end of the day, but from what I have heard, and the experience I got was a little different. He was nice to me though, showed me what I wanted to see and was helpful.
