BARRELS: chrome moly VS stainless steel

Barrel life and resistance to copper fouling tend to be less with stainless. Almost all target barrels are now stainless. When considering price, don't forget about the cost of bluing the CM if you are buying a replacement barrel.

Most will favor the SS because that is the steel most BR barrel makers choose to use. BUT CM barrels can be equally accurate, however, they are tougher to machine so some makers will not do them.

SS is also nice cause you don't need to finish them to keep from rusting. With barrel life being short, the extra cost of finishing is not always desired.

Stress relieved, air guaged, lapped BR quality barrels is what you are after. Lots to choose from and I can offer you 2 options.

In round numbers, I think accurate barrel life of a stainless is about double.

If you have it made with a 4" straight shank, you will be able to set it back 3" wjen it starts to open up and it will be like a new barrel.

Or just get a 1.25" Straight blank and you can cut it back as many times as the laws will allow based on the length :D

I have answered this in another post, but there is a growing body of credible but anecdotal evidence to support the belief that CM does not withstand the heat and pressure in the throat area as well as Stainless. How much inferior? well, I would never say half that of stainless as has been suggested, but for a high-pressure cartridge like a 6BR, I would suggest you go stainless.

CM is a stell much preferred for hunting rifles because a) it can be blued and B) it can be made into a much thinner barrel that stainless - safely. SS is much more rust resistant, and it is easier to work with.

SPend the extra $20 and go stainless....

My 2 cents......
