barrels? what do you choose

What is your intended use?
I have a Gaillard, Shielen, and now a Krieger. They all make great barrels.
Avalibility becomes a big issue as well.

I go with whatever I can gey my hands on when it comes time to rebarrel. I have used Obermeyer, Krieger, Bartlien, and MacLennan. Right now I am running a Kreiger and a MacLennan on .308's and a MacLennan on my .223. They all shoot well.

This is a loaded question you'll never get a straight answer out right. all barrels you mention are great barrel. In general most people say cut rifling is more accurate than button pulled rifling. However most people cannot tell with a premium barrel side be side. For myself budget plays into my decision, and reading article about people's result in competition helped me with my decision. What you've listed is only a handful of barrel makers, they're are many more. Consider thing like cost and availability, contour, chamber, length, material, manufacturing process, purpose... Some barrels you mentioned will take a long time to get (ie Krieger maybe a year depending on the retailer you choose). Good luck in your decision our won't be easy.

For I've used Shilen and have a Broughton on the way.

Honestly , of all the top barrel manufacturers , availability seems to be the biggest factor when time comes to rebarrel, 99.9% chance they will all shoot great . Find the contour you want , who offers it , and go from there

I've used Krieger, McLennan, Broughton, Shillen and Rock Creek and all shot excellently. Currently on my .308's I have Krieger and Broughton and on my .223 there is also a Broughton. Availability in the contour I want is the determining factor for me.

The only barrels that I have been truly impressed with is Schneider and Hart. By comparison Krieger, Douglas and Broughton did nothing for me, but lots of guys do seem to like them.

I have never had a True-Flight, but they seem to shoot well too.

The guy who cuts the chamber probably has more to do with potential accuracy....all the names you mentioned make very good barrels.

1. Gunsmith that understands how to properly chamber and crown a barrel

2. Kreiger
2. Broughton
2. Bartlein
2. Brux
2. Smith
2. Gaillard
2. Shilen

in that order.......

For .30 cal, don't forget about Mick McPhee.................he is right up there with the other listed top barrel manufacturers...... ;)

2+ for Mick, also I would add Border Bbls in the UK, cut rifled, generally a shorter order time and no US Export permits. The UK and CDN paperwork is much easier and can be done yourself.

CyaN1de, I know who you are from back when riflebarrels.ca was around. The 6xc I had was the owners.

Anyway I know u know what ur talking about so why is shillen at the bottom of ur list? hands on not impressed or just complete personal preference ?

I like the select match barrels but other than that all I've had used is Kreiger & McPhee. Loved them all. Might get a shillen for my .22 is why I'm wondering. Ur a shooter with more experience than I.

I think you missed the point of his post

In regards to rifle barrels, all the top makers, be it US or Canadian are more than capable of producing great shooting/winning barrels.

The kicker is, What are you expecting your barrel to be capable of doing?

I can speak for the top short range BR shooters. A barrel worthy of winning will shoot under a .150 CONSISTENTLY at 100. If not it may be set aside as a tomato stake. For the average Joe it will be just fine. Today the barrel may be a Kreiger, Gaillard, Hart. Tommorrow another. Being in Canada I would really look at a Gaillard or Mclennan at this time. JMO
