Barrels

That is like asking what is better, a pickup truck or a sports car? Each has its pros and cons and each is better at a different task. Depends on what you want to do with it.

If it is hauling 800 lbs of dirt to the dump then the sports car isn't the right choice. If it is a fast blast through a twisty mountain pass with yer girl then the pickup truck wouldn't be the best choice.

He never asked which is better, he asked what the pros and cons are, and you just told him there are pros and cons. :redface: Maybe you could elaborate on which gun I can haul 800lbs of dirt with? :D You weren't kidding about not giving an intelligent answer. :nest:

General speaking (and this is very general)... if you took two barrels of "equal" quality and cost (production cost not retail price) then in theory the Stainless barrel should give you better accuracy than the chrome lined chrome moly barrel... but the Chrome Lined barrel should give you longer life and easier maintenance (or more forgiving for lack of mainentance may be a better way to phrase it).

Having said that... if you spend the money you can get better quality and better made Chrome Lined barrels that will come pretty close to matching the accuracy of the Stainless... but if you then step up the cost of the Stainless barrel you'll pull out front again.

It's always a trade-off... you decide what is important to you and what you want to spend to get there :)

Chrome moly steel(in general) is chosen over SS for its yield strength at higher temperature as well as its resistance to corrosion which subjected to high heat - that is important for military small arms. The metallurgists type can pull you the hard data.
 
Regardless of material, get the best quality of barrel from a manufacturer of high regard that you can afford.
The barrel and bolt group is the very heart of the AR fow. Don't scrimp on these items.
