For less than $100, they're awesome scopes...for the price range that you are thinking of ($399), I would definitely get something else.
I have two 6.5-20x50AO Barska Varmint scopes on my .22's, and I think they're great...but I only bought them for $69. Don't know if I'd trust them with large or magnum calibers either.
I've looked at two Barska scopes. One was on a second hand rifle that the guy was trying to sell at the new price by adding a cheap scope and some rings that looked like they came out of his junk drawer. The other was new in the store.
Both sucked big time. Yes I know it's a cheaper scope.
With scopes you don't always have to pay the most for a good one. But a good one will never be "cheap". There are relatively few good bargain scopes out there.
I view it the same way as computers. The monitor will generally go with several computers and is the main part that you look at whenever you use the computer. Plus my eyes are important to me. So I'm willing to spend a lot more on the monitor. It doesn't make sense to go cheap on that component. This also applies to rifle scopes. Chances are you'll sell the rifle and move the scope if you buy a good one. It's also cheaper in the long run to buy the quality product.
For a bargain scope consider the Falcon scopes. Excellent reviews so far.
