base and rings for savage

well i am thinking of upgrading my base and rings for my 10fp in .308. i was just using a leupold std 1 piece and std rings. while it worked fine i really want a 1913 rail and better rings.

so i was looking at the leupold mark 4's, near base and rings aswell as ferral. what would you recomend, i am a poor (now finished!!) student so $$ is a concern. as well as are there any canadian dealers for ferral?

Brian Contact Richard at NEAR MFG if you want the best built 1913 Rail and Scope rings on the market for rings the Leupold MK IV's are great but the TPS rings are in the same league and if memory serves me correctly also less expensive than the Leuppys
 
Savage - I'd say Near products are quality products, but saying they are the "Best" is an exaggeration. Although a fine product (and Canadian made)I'd be interested in knowing in what way you see them as being the "best."

I was about to deal with Richard, and he was a dink on the phone. I mena a first class A-1 prick. Wouldn't take my money!:eek: I take it from people on the board leaping to Richard's defense that my experience was an aberration, but that doesn't mean I have to accept it. So I called Farrell and spoke right to Ken. Nice guy, very friendly and took the time to make sure I got the right product. That's why I recommend him so highly. Do I think his product is any better than Near? Not necessarily, no better and no worse IMHO. But he treated me better and that's enough for me. It didn't hurt that his product is less than half the $ of Richard's, being the cheap prick that I am.;)

FWIW there are quite a few Savage owners on the board and I would say we are split damn near 50/50 between guys that use Farrell bases and those that use Near. As a matter of fact I think that's damn near the only difference between Farmboy and my Savages (well, that and 6mm more objective:p ) and I think we're the original Savage Tactical pushers on the board.

I didn't know that TPS was offering a base for the Savage? When did this come about?

Well Joe that is my opinion and from my experience from using the rails I find that from mounting and changing scopes the zero stays the same in other words once the scope is zeroed for the rifle I can and have taken it off and remounted the scope I noticed that the scope 100m and 400m zeros were right on and no adjustments were required I can't say the same thing with for the other rails I have had.Do other manufacturers ship the same day and have exceptional customer service that is also a priority for many like myself no sense in getting the deal of a lifetime and get a lifetime of headaches
 
Richard Near was nothing but great with me.......
He only had a stainless Model 70 base when I called to order, I wanted black to match my gun, he said it would be a couple weeks as he was going down south and would make it when he gets back. In the meantime he says he will send me the satinless base to use until he can make me a black one......:)
He wouldn't take my money either, not until he got the black base made, and I had it and was satisfied with it. This was the first time I ever spoke to him, I'm a total stranger, and he sends me his product with no money.
To me, that kind of service is worth the extra cash.
 
I had a similar experience to Hitzy's and also hold Richard in very high regard. I can also say his product is among the best and his customer service is the best.

For people interested in Near product reviews I urge you to check some of the sniper websites from the States such as Snipershide.com, Snipersparadise.com and others, you will find Near products to be spoken very highly of.

OKay. thanks for clearing that up. I can't speak for the other manufacturer's shipping but I suspect if your timing is right when you place the order, they will ship the same day. Of course at the end of the day it also depends on how busy they are. You must have had some really bad experiences.

Despite your positive experience, the thread eludes to the exact opposite as well. It might have been worth while to say IMHO or IMHE/O...... they are the best.

In this case, given the item, I think there are many "quality" producers out there. It would be interesting to see the end product tolerances of each mfg to see who has the tightest mfg specs. I suppose for a quick and easy dimensional check, (if we had time) we could take a sampling from each manufacturer with the 1913 specs and see who comes out as the "best" in at least the dimensional class (based on the sampling).:)
 
Richard is producing 2000 bases for a US defence contract and the US Army's new sniper rifle has an extended length base as to accommodate a NV ocular IE: AN PVS14 and that one has already been contracted out , So that leaves only 1 branch with that many rifles the USMC as they use the Simrad NV optic. although he would not say it it goes to reason that this is the customer
 
I'm sure Richard is pleased. Its always good to hear that Canadian companies continue to be top producers. I haven't done much research on who supplies what and how much but I suspect some of the other producers also have some equally impressive volumes. Keep in mind, these may not be exclusive contracts and I suspect each organization tends to have a variety of suppliers for a number of reasons.
