I have weaver style bases and rings on my savage and i was wondering if it is safe to put those rings on my tikka witch is dovetail...i think? i did put them on and it seemed solid. but i wasnt sure if it would damage anything, or if it is the proper way to do things? also what rings would you recommend for my savage holding a vortex viper 6.5-20x50?

Thanks for the help!

just doesnt seem right...

I had optilocks on the tikka I owned, they were great but pricey (no ring marks, by changing the insert, I think you can hold 30mm or 1" in the same rings, and pretty sure they have a lug that locks them fore/aft!).

I would not use the rings in your picture, both sides of the dove tail are screwed on, instead of the regular type where 1 side is fixed, and the screws pull against the dovetail. The rings you have look do not look robust, and with opposing screws have an extra joint to become loose.

What caliber(s) are you using them on?

Yeah, 300 is a little stout, I'd make sure they were secure. I can't tell by the picture, but weaver uses a lug the keeps the rings in place fore/aft. If you clamp them over a dovetail, you lose that advantage...

I would go this route:

And some better rings

Or this, which is what I have mounted my last 7-8 scopes in (mostly on remington) integrated rings/bases and lightweight but strong:

If you like the talleys I can give you some tips for aligning them, as they are flat bottom for the tikka and not self aligning:

Get a 1" or 30mm shaft (I work at a machine shop, made my own),

loctite the front base down (blue loc tite)

put the 2 screws in the rear base but don't tighten

Clamp the shaft with the top rings on both front and rear but make sure it leaves the rear screw hole access able from the top (keep the shaft flush with the ring)

Loctite and tighter the rear screw, let it sit for 24 hours

Remove the rings, loctite the front screw in the rear mount

Install your scope

is it possible to mount weaver bases on that?
your receiver should be "tapped" (look for screw heads on the top of the action - not barrel) these tapped/threaded
Code:
screw holes will let you mount Weaver bases and then weaver rings can be used

YIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude, those rings do not go on that rail. The bottom of the rings aren't even touching the rail!!

Those type of rings fit into grooved bases like on the Ruger Mini 14's etc.

Just get the right rings. Do not drip and tap a Tikka that already has a rail. Just get the right rings.

And if you are going to drill and tap any rifle, put a Picatinny rail on it, not a weaver.

Ok - tikka is drilled and tapped like this

You can screw a pic. Rail on like this

Then put pic. Rings on it like this
