There's a lot of great info here regarding refinishing a stock. However, what's your tried & true method for giving the wood a little bit of TLC?

Although I'd like to refinish the rifle sometime down the road, for now I'd like to simply clean off surface dirt and grunge without further damaging the stock.

I used orange tko, all organic, sure turned the white towel brown.
Buffed when done and made a nice difference.

If I'm trying to get 100+ years of crud off I use 0000 steel wool, bone dry and lightly scrub in the direction of the grain. Watch carefully for color change and stop before it happens. Blow it off with a little air, then wipe with a lightly RLO'd rag. Rub that in vigorously by hand, you want the wood to get HOT. Then once it feels pretty dry you are done.
