I watched the History Detectives about the battle of Stalingrad and it showed the advantages the Russians had in regards to their rifles and equipment. The 7.62x54 sniper scopes were said to be easier to zero and less complicated than the "better" scopes the Germans were using at the time.
When the weather turned real cold the oil in the German 8mm's would freeze. The Russians countered that by adding gasoline to the gunoil and applied it to their rifles. The tests were done inside a big freezer showing the Russian and German rifles side by side , and after about 4 hours or so the German rifle opened but was very stiff. The Russian rifle with the gas/oil mix on it opened much easier and functioned better. Also the clothing the Russians wore was made for cold weather as where German soldiers were not well enough equipped to handle the drop in temperature and froze to death. The Russian snipers were very good and it was known that the Russian women were snipers and very good with the scoped 91/30 rifle.I can only imagine what it was like for the German infantry, freeze, starve or get shot.....winter in Stalingrad.

You read the book "Enemy at the Gates". The movie was based on the book but the movie only covered Vasilli the sniper. The book covers the whole battle for Stanligrad.

Both the War of the Rats and Enemy at the Gates are crap. Somewhat decent book is Anthony Beevers Battle of Stalingrad. Most of the German troops had summer uniforms on, once they were surrounded they were doomed by the Goering's promise to keep the 6th army suppiled by air. Hitler should have allowed 6th Army to attempt a break out. The winter of 42 was one of the coldest even for Russian standards.

There never was a sniper duel like described in the movie.

Cheers

in general, the fat porpotion in a woman body is more than a man. especially russian snipers who have to spend long hours in the field on a cold day during winter. so, i guess woman as a sniper can last longer in a cold winter field.

i also read that the german winter equipments were actually very good, or even better than the russian. the problem the germans had was logistic. couldn't get supplies to the front.

my grandfather told me they slaughtered the horses toosed the bones aside later men would dig them up and suck any remaing meat off them

the cold was the worst

My grandfather aquired a ppsh41 which he said ALLWAYS worked

he said he gave many bullets "back" to the russians

Very interesting, too bad I missed it :( . But I think in the end, the quality of German soldiers was far above that of the Russians, who were often "hazed" at Stalingrad, with little previous experience. Essentially it came down to numbers or men, tanks, and aeroplanes. I would also recommend "The Forgotten Soldier." Its not about Stalingrad, but a true account of a soldier in the Deutchland Division.

he told me he was a "specialist" so he got flown out, he was wounded by russian Mg fire a few weeks before they were in-circled

like Ive said before he defended berlin he helped main an anti tank gun a few blocks from the riechstag they were overrun many killed and he was now in charge he told everyone to leave he deserted and fled west

his oldest brother surrendered with the 6th army and was held until 1954

he had 7 brothers all fought 2 fell in battle

1 was captured by the americans..he was the guy who started the stablizing motor for the v2 rockets the americans thought he knew about rockets....:)

This is the best movie about Stalingrad that I have seen. Made by German filmakers from the German soldier's point of view, it is pretty gritty.

I'd recommend that movie as well.

The Germans did not only eat horse meat, they also resorted to cannibalism. Small details such as Mausers or Mosins had little to do with the outcome of the battle - mass movements of armies determined the result. The Germans were generally superior in tactics, but strategically they didn't have a clue.

Yes untill they were surrounded then they started cutting them.
By 1/3 then by 1/2 then by 2/3 then by 3/4. Horse meat was a deliccasy

My point was that the Russians had run out of food long before the Germans did, next on the menu was Horses, family pets, in some reports neighbors...:(

"The Forgotten Soldier" is an awesome book. I read it back in ~1980. It's the kind of book that can change your perspective on things (especially how "it can always get a lot worse")

Anyone know whether it's still in print?

Maybe that was then...But, Nowadays, with fast food and obesity, ...well, you know the score. :D
