* BAYARD Model 1908 – Regimental/Imperial accepted : 172.R.12.60
Here’s my Bayard Model 1908 (7,65m/m) dated circa 1916 - S/N: 170754
Obtained as a complete rig with a reserve magazine and its matching-numbered brown pebble grain holster
The holster maker’s name is "Hans Clemen" in « ELBERFELD » 1916
It bears a WW1 German regimental marking on front tang and on holster flap : 172.R.12.60
This refers to the 172nd (3rd Upper Alsatian) Infantry Regiment, located in Neubreisach, under XV Army Corps (HQ in Strasburg)
Quoting author Jan Still in « Central Powers Pistols » (Ed. 2007 - pp. 237-239):
« The 1908 Bayard was manufactured under German supervision at Anciens Etablissements Pieper, Herstal, Belgium during World War I.
These bear only German proofs and all or almost all in the serial range 103000-200000 bear German military stamps and were procured by the Imperial German Army…. »
43 x Imperial accepted Bayard M1908 are reported in CPP, but only 5 would bear a regimental marking. I’m glad adding one more.
For your appreciation, fellow collectors
