I recently through CGN got my hands on a SKS jungle stock for a song

The bayonet area however seems quite shorter than my wood stock by about 4 inches. What is the proper bayonet for this stock, and where would a person obtain one???

If needed I can post some pics, as soon as I find my camera

Blade or spike bayonet on your SKS?

My Chinese is a spike, but the groove on the jungle stock is too short. How long are the blades?

The distance between the magazine cutout and the end of the bayonet channel on the stock is 3 inches on the fiberglass jungle stock, and 1/2 inch on the wood stock.

I am planning on shelving the wood stock and using the fiberglass one.

My factory 26 SKS in a late 60's production with the standard blade bayonet. I don't have it handy to measure right now. It may be shorter and it has a different profile (curved v. straight) than the spike, therefore needing a shorter notch in the stock.

The fibreglass stocks are from the '60's era, AFAIK.

If you don't mind measuring the blade, as well as the distance of the carveout for the bayonet and the mag housing that would be great. I am will likely be looking for something that will fit.

Anyone have any good leads for SKS bayonets?

Sure, I'll do that this evening.

That is very possible because the cutout in the stock for the bayonet is deeper on the jungle stock than the wood stock. Does the blade use less length on the stock than the spike?

Blade bayonet is shorter than the spike. There are also "jungle" stocks which accomodate the spike bayonet. Slot for the blade is deeper and shorter. Spike bayonet cut out is more of a flat bottomed groove. The front band ferrule on the SKS is notched according to the bayonet type used, with a rounded notch for the spike and a "V" notch for the blade. The spike bayonet became standard for the Chinese T56 in 1966/67 at Factory 26 (Jianshe)and was eventually replaced by the spike in subsequent production at the second and third production wave factories as well. As a note, the blade bayonet types are original issue only on Factory 26 or M21(export) marked carbines made until the 1966/67 period.

Factory 26 produced T56 from 1956 to 1969/70. In 1980/81 a small run of Type 56 was made at Factory 26 when the Type 68 rifle was removed from service and before Type 81 production got into full swing. Thereafter, factory 26 converted it's production to consumer goods such as motorcycles.

if I have a spike on my SKS, can I change it to a blade bayonet for use with the jungle stock? or are the two fixtures incompatible?

The bayonet mounting will accomodate either type. With the "V" slotted front ferrule, the spike bayonet can be used. Same applies to a blade with the "U" slot type ferrule. In each of those cases, the bayonet may not fit flush in the folded position with a different ferrule slot. The style of the stock slot will determine the type of bayonet profile to be used.

That is very interesting. I recall Lever Arms back in the early 90s advertising SKSs with either spike or blade bayonets (I seem to recall they were quite cheap, maybe $89.00?). So the blade bayo ones were early production or were they "made up" for commercial sale?

I've seen obvious early Factory 56s rebuilt with spikes and stamped trigger guards. Incorrect parts but fully functional.

The level of refurbishment varies from a none to total with Type 56 carbines, depending on when they were imported over the last 20 or so years.

As a rule:

Blade bayos are found as original parts on Factory 26 carbines from 1956 to 1965-66. Serial number series run from the
"Sino-Soviet" first year (1956) models to the 10 Million series in 1966.

Spikes are found on Factory 26 from mid 10 million series to production end in 1970 with the 14 million series (1980-81 Factory 26 carbines also have them. Production was temporarily started up again because the Type 68 was removed from service and the Type 81 had not reached full production). All secondary and tertiary factory production from 1970 to end of manufacture around 1985 have the spike.

During the production period of the Type 56 Factory 26 implemented various manufacturing improvements such as the stamped trigger guard and two piece gas tube. These improvements were also used in much but not all of the subsequent non Factory 26 production.
