I recently bought my first sks and a crate of ammo, I noticed the bayonet is not sharp like a knife blade, is this normal ?

Yup, bayonets generally aren't sharpened, they are made to puncture more than to cut.

Could be a spike bayonet which is only vaguely blade shaped. It's designed create a gaping wound.

Bayonets are not knives. They are to stab the life out of your enemy. They are made of soft metal so they don't snap in half as what a real knife blade would do if it were used in the same conditions.

Thanks for the reply.Years ago I had one of those Ljungman AG42B rifles with the bayonet and if I recall it was very sharp.I guess this is why I wondered about the sks bayonet.

There are a few Bayonets that are shorter, stronger, and multipurpose, but unfortunately not on the SKS. Its too bad they don't have an aftermarket product that fits on them. It would make good sense to carry a blade on your rifle that is useful in the bush, general duty, or in a survival situation. I would consider purchasing a product of that nature, especially if I'm going to be carrying it around on my rifle anyways.

Bayonets, just like ancient roman Pilums, are deliberately not sharpened, so as to puncture the target and have the wound tear as opposed to cut to make the injury harder for the surgeon to repair.

As mentioned before, not supposed to be sharp. If you find a sharpened bayonet, its because someone sharpened it after it left the military.

My AK-74 Bayonet was brand new and sharp when it was issued to me. From what i have seen most of the Yugo Mauser bayonets are sharp. SKS I never seen one sharp. If you sharpen SKS bayonet it will start to damage your stock. If you sharpen the opposit side you will cut your hand when trying to unfolded. However if you are willing to invest around $200.00 for new Dragunov front Sight assembly and pay a gunsmith to install it for you, it has ak-47 bayonet lug on the sight/flash hinder assembly then you can attach any ak bayonet to it
