My local sporting goods store had a sale on yesterday, so got four boxes of Kent faststeel BB shotshells for my 2 3/4 inch Remington 870.

The problem is they only had only two boxes of 1 1/4 ounce loads, but lots of 1 1/8, so I got two boxes of each.

What's the difference ? Can I use these BB loads on ducks or are they considered mostly a goose load? I haven't got the hang of decoying or calling yet, so I am mostly pass shooting.

I still felt I hadn't spent enough money, so I bought one box of Federal shotshells in #2 shot, but they were only loaded with one ounce of shot. I thought tht was odd, as the other #2 shells I have bought were loaded with at least 1 1/16 ounces or more. Why just an ounce of shot?

TIA

Better check those numbers again. The 2.75" faststeel is usually 1 1/16 oz at 1550 fps, or 1 1/8 oz. at 1400 fps. Are you sure its fasteel?? BB is awfully big, over decoys I use 3 or 4 , and pass-shooting, #2, and for all geese #1. All of my shooting is within the magic 40 yds, and I average under 2 shells per bird (including cripples)with these loads.

BB will probably turn them into hamburger if too close.

I also load my own, and my favorite duck slayer is a 3/4 oz. ultra high speed at 1800 fps. With #2 shot at 25-30 yds, I am shooting completely through the bird, so yes, you can easily kill birds with only 1 oz of shot ( same # of pellets generally as the old 1 1/8-1 1/4 lead dept on shot size).

PaulMartinIsTheAntiChrist!!! Damn that's a good name for this forum!!! Just about spit up my beer!!!

Yes, I agree with PMITAC, ha ha ha, I use #4's over decoys, and always the 1550 stuff... I've yet to see faster, but hell, I'd use it...

Cheers

PaulMartinistheAntichrist Kent does make a fast steel in 2.75 inch load with 1 1/4 charge but its super slow stuff at 1300 FPS

Kent now has 3 1/2" at 1625 FPS 1 1/4oz charge in BB, 2 I bet there pretty deadly.

They also have a lead shot that shoots at 1400FPS bet thats deadly on Jacks.

Oh here's kents website: http://www.kentgamebore.com/main/products.asp

I've used BBs on ducks on occasion while goose hunting... But at close range, they can mess up the meat pretty good. I usually stick with #6 Hevishot (or #4 steel if the paycheck hasn't come in that week...);)
But you may find a larger shot (#3 to #1) may work better for longer range pass-shooting scenarios. There'll always be the tradeoff between load and velocity though. For my purposes with 2 3/4 only 1 1/8 or heavier seem to cycle well in my ancient autoloader...

BB for ducks

Heck yes you can use that load for ducks esp this time of year when the birds are bigger and fully feathered, makes for less time searching for cripples. Should you ever see the 1 1/16th oz 2 3/4 inch load on sale that would be a better all around load esp for ducks, regards a soon to be unemployed Kent rep!!

The only real way to find out what will work best in your gun is to pattern the shells/choke combinations you have.

BB on a duck in decoys hmm, that's kinda like a,a,a,a, ........ .300 mag for whitetail isn't it

Wait now, I forgot where I was, BB's are fine... I'd even venture to say that 00 buck might put them down too.;)

Thanks

Thank you gentlemen,

I'm stocked up on #2 loads for duck too, it's just that I saw these BBs on sale and couldn't resist.

Just fixed my previous problem too. I returned the 1 1/4 ounce loads and exchanged them for 1 1/8.

I couldn't resist at $7.50 a box.

Now I'm 100 rounds ahead for goose hunting.

1800fps. Wow. Can you let me know where you got the loading data. I reload my own and only found data for 1450fps.#3 steel 1oz 2 3/4".

Sure why not. Just keep the choke opened right up and go to town. Once I get rid of my other buffet of 3 inch loads, I will step up to the plate and use 3 1/2 inch winchester expert hi velocity BB's for ducks and geese. Have worked in the past so why not.

I would agree with Mumptia.. Personally- I used #4 Winchester fast steel in a 3" cartridge for quackers to good effect. But each to his own, I don't fire 'till I see the whites of their eyes! (I'm cheap!)

Watch them xpert steel shot loads I took 10 apart and the pellets are all deformed some are even pointy and sharp. Might not be good on the barrel.

Thats what they say about the hevi shot as well. They look like tear drops or weld drops, some not really round at all. At least that what they looked liked when I took one apart. For some reason they pattern beautifully though. I think that the hevi is just as hard as steel is it not??

Hevi shot is no where near as hard as steel. It's properties are very close to lead.

The reason the hevishot is out of round, is due to the cost of making it. To make it perfectly round or atleast better, it would cost a lot more.

call me crazy, but I use #2 for justabout everything. Bunnies=2-lead, crows= 2-lead, g-hogs = 2-lead, then goose, ducks, and (piss me off crows when I'm out for goose) = 2 steel. If my barrel could take BB steel, i'd probably rely on those. My rationale is "fewer pellets = less broken teeth" (a problem encountered when using #6 or smaller lead on bunnies). As far as the # 4's (steel) go: I tried them when I first started out and thought I was getting little penetration. Looked like I hit them, but they didn't drop. Maybe I sucked MORE then..dunno.
