I recently bought an SKS with the finish completly stripped off teh entire thing (intentionaly) and have been trying to think of ways to re-finish it.
My grandpa (who always has an amazingly inginuative mind) suggested BBQ paint. it looks good (on BBQ's anyways) and gives almost a parkerized look, as well is VERY heat resistant and can take an amazing amount of abuse.

Has anybody ever tried this? if so how did it work?

Any comments?

I tried it on a 10/22... in my opinion it comes off to easy but if you heat your metal parts up to let's say 300-400F it should work better....

I had a hell of a time trying to get paint to stick to a muffler, finally took it for a drive and then painted it... worked great.

The BBQ paint also looked better after oiling it and rubbing it down (wet) with superfine grit paper.

Another option, use a good primer and the black paint from a gun camo kit.

Hunter Specialties is one supplier of such paint. I think you can get it at wally world and gun shops

I've had mixed results with paint. For the most part it stood up pretty well, but came off quickly when I had bug dope on my hands. By the way - if you do end up painting preperation is everything. The parts must be completely degreased. For all it costs to have the gun treated with the new "spray 'n heat" finishes like Gun Kote, I'd just send it out.

I BBQ painted one of my 1911's about 16 years ago. Finish looks good, stays on and is easy to reapply should you need to. Pre heat the parts to be painted after a degreasing and let her have it. Then after painting, put the whole thing in the oven for an hour or so @ 200 degrees F to bake it on.

Try VHT 1500 degree exhaust paint.Comes in Flat Black as well as other colors.

I have used this on my Stainless Harley exhaust and Stainless barrels with great success.

Surface prep is the key.make sure all surfaces are degreased and lightly scuffed before spraying.

Use a clearcoat over the finish.

I use Excel Colorvision Matte Clearcoat. You can find it at Rona.

On an sks I'd reblue the metal parts if it was stripped already. I thoought of doing this to my cz 858 but everything is painted. I'd Have to blast and polish before blueing. Lotsa work. It'll look good when you're done ;) I like those rifles
