Just wondering if it would be worth it to buy a treated BCG. I see different coated BCG's online and in a few guns stores. WIll the use of the type of carrier enhance reliability?..I should have a spare one...and was thinking to use my current BCG in my STI AR as a back up, and buying a new one.
any thoughts or suggestions?

It's like fishing lures. They aren't designed to catch fish, they are designed to catch fishermen and their dollars. It's a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

Standard phosphate works as intended. Just use lots of lube, and they tend to be harder to clean.
Nickel Boron is smooth as silk, need less lube and is easier to clean up. Its naturally more lubricious.
Black Nitride is a great coating too, harder, lubricious, and easier to clean than phosphate.

Phosphate coating was mil spec for the M16 and variants after it was deemed too expensive to use Eugene Stoners original chromed carrier spec. Phosphate is an OLD coating spec. Newer technology has improved wear and lubricity properties, and while they cost more, they do have benefits.

:agree:

All will work well but some are better. Only you can decide if it's worth the extra cash.
I don't see much of a need for a spare carrier, maybe a bolt but I don't hear of many failing out there in a semi auto civilian owned rifle. They should last for many thousands of rounds unless they are poorly made.

My old DPMS came with a chromed carrier.....it does clean up real easy. I don't think I would find it a must through....
