I may or may not have purchased a few cases of Hirtenberger pre-emptively. What's the general consensus of this particular ammo in the stock BCL102 barrel?

Jay posted a picture of a single group a while back and that was it in terms of range reports for this particular ammo.

it is functional, about 4-5 moa, I will use it for plinking and fun ringing steel at 2-300 yards

So whats the best for the bcl102? Im a noob when it comes to 308

My rifle will print 3 shot groups right around 1 inch with 168 grain Norma Match. It will do the same with 150 grain Barnes TSX.

4 - 5 moa .... jeez no better than a lousy M14s.

The Hirtenberger doesn't print good groups from my BCL102, but it does function flawlessly with it.

That being said, my BCL102 is much more accurate with the two ammo types listed above, than any of my previous M14 rifles were...

YMMV...

Cheers
Jay

It's not the gun...Hirt has atrocious run-out. It's good clean ammo and the boxer brass stuff is good reloading brass. Just not really accurate ammo. I ran some through my bolt gun that is an easy sub-moa rifle with handloads and it was 4-5moa as well.

I have read one here that some people were shrinking there groups with Hirt ammo by up to half by running them through a crimp die. the Explanation was the sealant around the bullet was toast that lead to poor neck tension.

No XP with the 102, but you could say a fair bit with the ‘14 platform.... this is generally what groups look like with “out of the box” Hirt....

Same rifle with handloads:

168 SMK, H-4895, for those that are curious.

All that said, I’ve found pulling the Hirt projectiles and culling the heavy or light projectiles and equalizing the powder charges. Groups tend to be cut in half (or more).

That's part of it. I re-seated match or hunting bullets of similar weight/profile with excellent results.

That sounds like an awful lot of work, why not just enjoy the Hirt the way it is as plinking fodder and just make some proper handloads for accurate shooting?
Some of you guys must have a lot of free time on your hands, must be nice.

I think you misunderstand/dont understand my particular purpose in doing so.
Taking off the combat bullet and putting on a match bullet is definately cheaper than factory match (with acceptable difference in performance).
AND--it is a big time saver over extensive load development. I only do this for my DMR/sniper set ups--otherwise, like you suggest, I plink like the rest

I agree.

Was shooting some hirt out of my xcr. Someone at range asked what I was shooting. I said nothing much, just making brass....
